Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road Bike weights?

I'm just curious about how heavy road bikes tend to run...

I weighed mine on bathroom scale and got 23.5 lbs w/pump, two empty water bottles and my saddle bag w/tools.

I think that's pretty good, but don't have any basis of comparison.

my bike weighs in on the scale at about 17 lbs. without bottles, or my seat pack.. I have a Lemond Maillot Jaune with Ultegra and Shimano 540 wheels... fully loaded I'm guessing I tip the scales at around 20-ish ?

i've always thought anything under 20 pounds is leaning towards light. i'm probably at 21-22 with the seat pack. of course, it's not really what your bike weighs. it always amuses me to see guys on 30 pound 7 speeds dusting kids on 16 pounders at the sprint of a local group ride...

My bike weighs in at 20lbs with pack, cages, and computer. I regard 20lbs and lighter as "light." The cost of making it any lighter is exponential. As the others mentioned, the weight of the bike as little to do with anything.

Well, my bike weighs in at 21 lbs and that is with heavy duty wheels, 25 mm tires, and a pack with spare tube, tire irons, spoke wrench, chain tool and allen wrenches.

I used to waste the older guys on my 6 speed Centurion up until I got the Lemond... and they were on Trek 5900's.. hehe old guys with too much money, and not enough legs to make it worth it... I wanna say the Centurion weighs in around 25 lbs. bare... it's a bit heavy... going from that to the Lemond is heaven...

When my bike and myself combined, weigh 185, we feel very sluggish. But once we're down to under 175, we can really fly!

Well,
when I put my bike on the scale, the scale said 25 pounds. And while that is a lot; it's not a lot for a touring bike with a rack and fenders on it. One of those cup half empty/half full deals. I plan on going on of those pricey sagged touring vacations someday. I want to do the 10 day ocean to ocean ride across Italy. The rack and fenders will come off. I also plan on buying some light weight parts, and getting the weight down close to 20.

I'm around 19 for mine with out anything strapped to it. with water though, that brings the weight up another 3-4 pounds, and my seat pack is probably a half a pound. I really need a chase car, man.

And this is why my butt is training everyday, I don't want to be one of those "old guys" getting wasted. I like wasting the young guys who can't quite understand why when they attack on a hill that if they are going to get it they damn well earned it!!

I hear ya... I'm 28 now... my goal is to keep the younger guys away from me forever ! It's always more fun to attack on a hill... look over... give them that Lance Armstrong look like "You wanna piece of me ??" and then keep on ridin' !! Boo-ya !

my goal is to never be the old guy :-)

of course there are a couple of guys in my club that are are easily twice my age, and can readily smoke me anytime they feel... so it all evens out

Hi 'late'

I was interested in your '10 day ocean to ocean across Italy' - In April I rode the Italian Riviera from Nice to Pisa, then to Firenze and Bologna. What route are you intending to take ?

8.5 kg [about 18.5 lbs] with no bottles and no wedge pack. of course, it is a small frame [51 cm], so that probably has something to do with it...

Hi Robert,
I will prob go with Cicclisimo Classico. There is an episode of Bicycle Journal that followed this trip; and it just looked spectacular.

Hmmm... take a poll. Ask the old guys if they were having fun even while you screamed past them. If their answer was "yes" then what does it matter how much they spent on their bike?

So I took off the water bottles, pump and seat wedge and re-weighed. 20 lbs even. Now I know I must be a stud, and fast! Ohh wait, I guess I'm middle aged and a tad out of shape....hmmm maybe if I spend more $$ on a bike, the chicks will dig me....NAHH

She is a Ti, without seat pack and water bottles its 18.5 lb; with me on it it's 158.5 lb, and I think the second weight is more important than the first.

I'll agree for the sake of making me feel better about the weight of my bike (~24lbs loaded) and with me 154lbs. But, it's all about the engine

I use a digital bathroom scale (that also tells me my body fat ). I first weigh myself on the scale and then weigh myself with the bike. Subtract the former from the latter and I get the weight of the bike. My bike weighs 20lbs. with cages, CO2 inflator and saddlepack installed and 17lbs. without.

your lbs probably has a scale that they use to weigh bikes.

Curious how you knew that it was a 5900 if you were going that fast? Slow enough, I guess to be able to see whether it had Dura Ace or Ultegra, eh?? And to be able to tell the difference between OCLV 120 vs. 110. I sell them and can't tell the difference without looking at the tiny logo on the frame.

Do you race? What category? How many wins?

I do enjoy the young guys riding a half mile at 30 MPH, then I catch them a few minutes later looking like they just crossed the Sahara...they ride 20 miles, I'm fininshing 60 miles at a 23 MPH leisurely average. Solo. At 49 years of age. But then, I was CAT II when I raced.

Enjoy the bike.
