Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Commuting

There are currently more people looking at the commuting forum (349) than the road bike forum (331). How does that make you feel?

Good for the future of biking, all types of biking. On my ride tonight, I saw more utility cyclists than road cyclists, and that makes me feel good as well. More baskets, than carbon fiber.

Considering this thread, https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/442668-commuting-work-how-much-will-improve-my-riding.html, unsuprised.

My evil plan to cross road nazis and commuter freds to create a hybrid cyclist (we'll call them Floyds) is coming to fruition.

commuter racer here.

I've never been to the commuter forum, because it's not as fun to talk about. There are a lot more myths to poke fun at on this forum.

Stiff bottom brackets are key to a speedy commute, you know.

I had increased the commuter world by one, then watched said commuter break an elbow as he went down right in front of me. It sucked; he has a great attitude about it though.

saw 6 roadies today.

saw dozens of commuters in that same time.

i like it, it's a good thing for the environment, our communities, and people's well-being.

I've convinced two coworkers to switch to bikes for their commute so far this year, I'm pretty happy about that.

All bike riding is good. I started comunting on basic road bike, got hooked and now bought myself a 'weekend flyer' and cycle everywhere i can.
As in post above, i've convinced 2 co-workers to cycle to work and working on a third, just need to find a decent bike for his low budget.
More commuters, less cars, less chance of getting hit on way to work!

I still believe it, just don't talk about it anymore.

It's funny, I just had a conversation with Trek, and they "don't test it" either. If I had one of these high-tech bike test labs, and budget for... well, never mind. You know....

I commute 50km a day on my 07 Allez Elite. Average pace approx. 32kph. Does that make me a commuter or a roadie?

40 miles round trip, 4 days a week for me. Compared to driving, I only lose about 35 minutes each way. Ride hard on the way home. Race or really long rides on weekends. Perfect.

Surely stuff like that is blown out/fixed early on by FEA rather than by old fashioned, expensive, destructive testing regimes?

They said they have no data and don't test it. FEA would produce data. There are two possiblities here:
  1. They have data from tests and/or FEA, and won't share it because there is no support for stiffer frames being more efficient
  2. Smart engineers don't bother testing or simulating because it's easy to see that there's no efficiency benefit from a stiffer frame
Thanks for the push-start there Eric

I started commuting a few months ago, 10 miles each way. I can't say enough good things about commuting as a "roadie." The commute can make you stronger.

And as a family guy, my wife is much more accepting of me doing my rides as transportation to/from work. Before the commute, any mid-week post-work riding would put me in the doghouse....no longer an issue with the commute. So it's a win-win situation.

I'd assume they'd be using FEA to minimise materials rather than maximise stiffness. Efficiency is relative anyway, e.g., www.powercranks.com

As far stiffness goes, the most comfortable frame I've ever ridden was a 58cm (just a little too big for me ) steel tange infinity wet noodle.

Yeah, either way, all the bike companies are claiming greater efficiency year by year, but not saying anything that could quantify it. I guess they can always claim the minuscule amounts absorbed by the material, but it's completely insignificant.
