Any Canadian Wheelbuilders??
I keep reading all these threads on BF about how custom hand built wheels are the way to go...
Too bad all the builders that get talked about are in the States...
Anyone know if any builders in the Toronto area??
I'm probably due for some new wheels this spring and something nice and light, but durable might just fit the bill....Oh yea, they can't cost me an arm and a leg...I need those things to ride

There's a guy who does contract work for wheel building for bike's on wheels (and probably other shops too), his name was... Leon I think... he built my niobium 30/ultegra/105, and they are holding up very nicely. I hear he's the best in the city.
The catch is Bike's on wheels doesn't have a decent stock on spokes so it's best if you gather all the materials needed before having them built.
They costed me $50 each without materials.

you can now buy campagnolo, fulcrum or xero wheels for less than $300.
will buying rims, hubs, spokes and labour cost you less than that, or get you something lighter?

One thing I have quickly learnt is that wheels are probably the best, bang for the buck, upgrade you can make to your bike...
AEO, couldn't have said it better...

no i don't, please educate me.
unless you a building Lews with tune hubs or trying to get a pair of wheels under 900g i don't see the advantage.
there are hundreds of wheelsets available from respectable manufactures such as the ones i mentioned above from $250 up to over $6000 if you want a set of obermayer gen III.
the OP doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg so i assume less than $1000. (chime in if i'm wrong)
i know of over 20 sets available under that price. a few aero wheels as well.
if you are building for the sake of customizing and enjoy choosing your own stuff then that is fine but also a more expensive route.
if you are worried about mass produced factory build quality then have the shop tech check trueness and tension once you recieve them. you are not going to get any different level of material by buying them separately. you can have the LBS change your spokes out if you have a hard-on for something particular.
that's my experience. am i missing something?

Handbuilt wheels is not about cost. People who don't understand the difference between machine built wheels and handbuilt ones by a competent mechanic are just ignorant.

I would never trust a $300 wheelset for the long run...
If you read some of my other threads you would see that I am currently on Ksyrium Elites, which my rear is pooched....I'll hit ebay to replace that, but come spring time I want to replace my Fulcrum Racing5's that are on my Roubaix. I find the wheels a tad on the heavy side and the rear hub noise is driving me insane...I feel like I'm fishing...My wife is always telling me to reel in the damn fish...
With all that said, I've had the factory built stuff and now I'd like to try a nice set of customs....
I'm a lightweight ride (less then 145lbs) that doesn't race, but like to ride as fast as possible. I think getting some lighter wheels, that are still durable (I live in Hamilton...read POTHOLE HELL), is a good idea...
BTW, incase you are wondering....Budget is about $800, but that is always negotiable...
Hmmmm, wonder if I could get a 2 for 1 deal....Wifey has seen the thread...

You have Fulcrum 5's - they are nice, light, and durable - what's the problem?
Any wheelset that's going to be nicer than those are going to cost at least $800 bucks.
F1's, Ksy SL's, RR1450's, Zipp CSC, Campy Neutrons... all around or above this price point...
Go to LaBicicletta - ask for Lorne.

You're much better off getting bang for your buck in investing in deep dish tubulars. The aero advantage is unmistakable, but saving 500g between box section clinchers - not too sure about that...
I went from F7's to RR1450's - zero difference, except that the taller rim was an effort to get tires on..

Actually it kind of makes me chuckle....
Guy comes on says he's looking at a Mavic this or Fulcrum that and everyone goes on about custom....
Then someone asks about custom and the reverse happens....
Gawd I love BF!!!

OK forget the $300 wheels. good to see someone spending real money.
so many people on this site get offended at $60 bottle cages.
the Easton EC90 SLX have caught my attention.
very light at 1060g per set and reasonable at $1600.

Aluminium Crusader :-)
There seems to be a bit of 'thing' on this forum where the people here think that there's only like 4 guys in all of the U.S. who can build wheels. People bang on about that Garcia guy like he's doing something magic!
Almost all bike shops will have someone who can build wheels. I'm just a backyard hack who's never worked in a bike shop, yet I've done about 25 wheel builds of my own (I don't have 25 wheels -- I've respoked a lot of my old ones).
So there!

The thing is I find most of the shops around here don't seem to want to build the wheels, they alway stir you towards the catalogue and the prebuilts....

They don't want to build them because the guy who builds them probably isn't much better than the machine that put together the factory stuff.
