Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I crashed today, helmet replacement question

Well it was bound and determined to happen and it did. Today i was doing a easy recovery ride and crashed. I broke my water bottle cage, scuffed my shifters, and brused the hell out of my hip. I do remember when i hit that my head also hit the pavement and i did damage my helmet. Since I did damage my helmet does anyone know how or has dealed with Giro on helmet crash replacements. WHat do i need to do. It is a Atmos

I crashed about three weeks ago and cracked my Atmos too. Except I wasn't so lucky and fractured my hip. I called Giro and found out that they have a replacement plan that will give you a 30% discount off of the MSRP on any Giro or Bell helmets. You can either send your damaged helmet to Giro directly and purchase the new one from them with the discount or walk into any participating Giro/Bell reseller and they'll give you the 30% discount. I called a number of LBS's here in Seattle and most of them do honor this replacement plan (except for REI).

Cost benefit:

Cost of new helmet = $100 more or less
Benefit of protecting brain is probably greater than $100.

I'd go with the new helmet.

But, that's just me.

Glad your crash wasn't too bad.

Did you actually read the post? He wasn't asking if he should replace it, he was asking about dealing with Giro for crash replacement. Geez.

kinda sucks about giro and that plan they have. you can get it cheaper than 30% off when places are having sales.

from now on, i'm sticking with bell. Bell has a crash replacement program where u pay like 35 bucks and send it to them and they send you a new helmet.

sucks considering bell owns giro

**** then why the hell does Giro's crash replacement policy completely fail...I have a broken helmet just sitting on my couch because I didn't feel like going through the trouble to get a new helmet for more than what I can buy it for online...

This is what's on the page linked from the URL above "This page was last revised on: November 13, 2003. ". I guess I am waaaaay behind in my helmet market knowledge.

Yup. It's like how Bontrager and GF is part of Trek, common knowledge in cycling industry.

The acquisition happened in 1996. It's no biggie if you didn't know. IIRC, when I purchased my Bell Sweep, it came with a $30 crash replacement pamphlet, only applicable to American customers though.

I bought my bike helmet for less than $40 (I can let you know what brand tomorrow when I get home, but basic LBS supply brand with a little LED in the back). I crashed. It cracked. I'm okay. It had a FULL replacement warranty, and my LBS actually returned it for me and gave me a new one the same day.

You can get a OMG KEWL helmet for $100 or more, but they all have to meet the same standard for protection... I would say forget the 30% off and just get a cheapie.

Glad you weren't hurt too bad.

Yeah, except the cheapie weighs more, and isn't as well vented, so more uncomfortable to wear.

Having said that, I use a Bell Alchera, which runs around $50. My next helmet will be a Sweep-R, though.

I was told a year ago by Giro that I needed the sales receipt. Has this changed?

You need the sales receipt.

Replacement program isn't all that great. You can get a new one for much less than what they give as a discount if you look for sales. Expecially from Performance.

The Bell policy (which I have used 3 times this year..so far) is also a 30% discount off list price. All you have to do is phone them and give them the serial # from the damaged helemet. No more Sweep R's only Sweep's now as the Volt is the new top of the line.

Really? Wow. I just started riding again in February, so I hadn't been around helmets for a while. The one I had several years ago was horrible, and even the cheapie I have now is still very, very much better than that. Compared to my old one, it feels like I don't even have a helmet on. The more expensive ones are much better than that, hmmm? I'll have to look into that.
