Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you are thinking about getting rollers.......

Then get them. I found a set on craiglist for $75. Kreitlers with the 4" tubes. I completely re-finished them and added a new Kreitler band and stickers. They look, heck , even smell new (paint)

Its getting cooler here and yes, I still ride outside and will well into Nov. or Dec. but I rode in the basement tonight and I will tell you... The ride was awesome, flip a DVD in and let it rock. When I finished, my sweat was running into the A/C drain, yea, *eeew* but it was that kind of ride. The bottom Bracket of my new Felt F3 was soaked too from the sweat. Last and most important, I averaged 17.7 Now do that on a trainer.

So ditch the trainer vs. rollers thread, get some rollers!

i like to get all my cycling gear on, put my rollers on the sidewalk and just spin. its awesome and people that walk by are great motivators to sprint and cars too. if they look and stare i crank it up to 180rpm. if it starts to rain then i put up one of those large tents. it really feels like i'm on the road without any of the hazards or the cold wet rain.

I have actually done this. Only because I was home alone with four little people and couldn't go for a ride. It was too hot in the house (we live by the coast and have no A/C) so I set up the rollers in the shade out front. I definitely got some funny looks.

Get rollers. They make you a better rider. Screw all those squirrels that don't know how to ride. Teach yourself to look behind you while grabbing for a water bottle while on the rollers and you're better than 99% of riders out there.

I got the E-Motion rollers in April (which didn't make much sense, since I've been riding outside since I got them). I like the movement they provide. As it gets darker, I imagine I'll be using them come this winter.

Rollers definitely make you a better rider in ways that you cannot do while on the road. Not too sure about a trainer though since I don't have one.

MPHs? How does that compare to your average out on the road? I'm finding that there is a big difference in the two for me... I use Nashbar rollers and they are a lot easier than the road. No way I can do 40mphs on the road without a motor.

Ditto I only have 1, but I have put my Emotion Rollers on my back deck(under the awning) when my wife is working and I couldn't get on the road.

I have to ask... if you're outside anyway, why be on rollers? Rain or no rain.

In my case...it's because of the little people. I can get a good hour or two in and still kind of be responsible for them. Or at least have them in sight and I'm here if they need me for something. If I'm out of the road, not so much.

I like them for intervals, 20 minute, 10 minute and 5 minutes are great work outs. Yesterday during the rain I did a 20 and two 5's both at around 120ish rpm, the legs were pretty toasted afterwards. It's hard to find flat enough ground around here to do that outside without going up and down hills to screw with your pace.

I Velcro my kids to a wall and put on some stupid movie for them. Keeps them safe and I can be gone for hours. Usually they're asleep when I get back.
