Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got hit tonight

I drew a picture below to demonstrate what happened. I wasn't injured and the bike wasn't damaged. We just impacted and I laid into the side of the SUV to try and keep from being sent into the curb. I am orange and they are blue, and no I wasn't riding beside them after we hit, the picture just shows the path we took. They were moving only about 28mph after it happened and I could have easily caught them if I had wanted to, but I didn't, but it left me plenty of time to yell at them and get their tag number. I reported a hit and run and took a trip to the police station. The police seem to be doing a good job so far and I don't think it will be forgotten about like some ****ty police departments would.

And yes it was made obvious by them that they did see me.

Sorry, glad you are ok, don't get your hopes up about any "legal" action, but you never know.

If your case goes to court, I expect you to use that exact picture to explain to the jury what happened.

Did you intend to make a right turn where you indicated, or was that route forced upon you when the car cut you off? If you were turning right, did you signal? (Even if you didn't signal... yes, you did signal. )

Good to hear the police are taking it seriously. Hard to say if the driver would get any sort of citation without anything other than your word vs. his, but hopefully just the police showing up at his door will make him more cautious in the future.

I was intending to make that right turn, and of course I signaled . But even If I had not signaled I may have been going straight and they would have turned and cut me off any way.

You clearly had right of way, good that you weren't hurt. But you're not much of an artist , stick with riding.

Ha, that picture's pretty nice. Glad you're okay, and a round of applause for not only taking tags but calling police. Far too many people get hit and don't follow through with a phone-call and license plates.

Please nail them to protect the rest of us. Glad your OK. You could easily have been sucked under the SUV and be dead now. Seriously, think about it ... and then NAIL THEM!

Glad you're ok. Let us know what happens with the case.

If you want to re-make your map, I recommend you start with a Google Maps satellite photo:
https://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=3...01674&t=h&z=19

Or maybe a choice bird's eye view from Live Search Maps: https://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=...cl=1&encType=1

Update:

So apparently they found the person who did it. A 50- 60 year old black woman. Says she didn't see me. They are charging her with reckless driving and she is supposed to appear in court Jan. 9. They didn't say for sure that I would have to go.

She says she didn't see me, even with all my lights. But she still kept driving.

My experience is that the police take hit and run very seriously. If the driver had stayed at the scene, then this would probably end up being a nothing matter in the eyes of the police, but hit and run is a big deal.

Did she also not hear or feel the thump when she hit you?

She hit me, kept going, then applied her brakes a few seconds later slowing to a crawl, like 15mph. Thats how I had time to yell and get the tag number. Then she slowly started to speed up but I was able to stay close to her for a while. All that an I impacted on the passenger side right about at the front door, if she still couldn't see me she is legally blind.

I swear, I think a lot of people think hitting a cyclist is like hitting a squirrel-it's probably good to stop and make sure, but if you're in a hurry to get home and watch Dancing With the Stars, it's okay to keep going.

Hot damn, good for you.

I guess NY is different.

I got clipped by a car and the mirror of the car folded in when it hit me. I sprinted after the car, but then saw a NYPD car on the side of the road. The car that had clipped me was still visible. I rode up to the police car window and knocked on the window. The police officer rolled down his window. I looked at him and said "see that van"? He responded "yea". I said "that van just hit me". He looked at me and said "do you want me to take a report"? That was it, then the light changed and the van drove away.

Glad the police where you live aren't lazy like where I live.

I would expect to get clipped by a mirror if I rode in NY City or Manhattan. Of course the same would go for Atlanta to. I always said the Atlanta city workers could squeeze a 4 lane highway into the smallest place I've ever seen.

When I lived in NYC (which was until August), in all those years of biking I never got clipped by a mirror. I did clip several mirrors, though.
