Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rode from home to do Montrose(large group ride in SoCal) and got a flat as the group rode by.. Ended up doing a 50 mile ride alone.

If the temps had topped out at 41 degrees here, I'd have also been out there taking advantage of the nice weather!!

20 miler, solo. Gloomy overcast with temps in the low 50s. No wind or rain, though :-) Got chased by a dog at the halfway point (bonus sprint!) Intended to take a map to investigate more of the backroads, but forgot. Will have to try again next weekend. Right now I'm looking for more flat stretches in preparation for base training next year.

I was going to take the old Bianchi out today, but by the time I got ready the snow was starting to fall in earnest...so I took the snow bike instead and did an 18 mile loop. It was great, it was about 25F, the snow was falling, the roads were unplowed, I was dressed just fine, spinning easy on the middle ring and I had TSO playing on the MP3 player...made it start to feel like Christmas.

On the down side, I had to stop twice to check on stupid drivers who had whoopsies cuz they ain't bright enough to slow down on snow covered roads.

Rode the normal bike shop route by myself. Where I normally see a dozen or more riders coming the other way, I saw one. A bit cold. But it warmed up nicely, and was a beautiful ride. Pics in the Clydesdale "post a picture" thread.

27 miles @50F.
However, I was on a mountain bike hauling my son on a tag along.
Some idiot lady had her three dogs off leash and one took my son's mitten and dunked it in the river.
My 5 year old rode home while it was cooling down wearing my gloves. Apparently they were having a fight. Oh the mind of a kid.
My hands started to get cold a couple miles before the car. Good ride followed up with a bit of christmas shopping.

I didn't know the tour was on. He does such a great job and he's a heck of a guy as well.

Is there a ride tomorrow?

38 miles, mostly flat, out to the end of Vancouver Lake. Cold start, but clear skies, which is just incredible this time of year in the Pac NW. Headwinds weren't as bad as normal.

63 miles here in Maryland. Started the ride around 1:30PM and it was light overcast with temps around 35F. Not as cold here as some of the others but still pretty cold and damp. I rode over the BWI Airport and then continued down the B&A trail to Annapolis and the waterfront. I saw a decent number of other rider and joggers out there braving the cold as well. I thought I dressed warm enough but found out later that wasn't quite the case.

With about 15miles to go it started to snow... light, wet snow and it surely didn't make the ride better. I kept slowing down and getting colder as the ride wore on. Good thing I had my lights because it got dark before I got home. I finally made it home, quickly stripped down, and jumped in the shower. The skin on my legs and stomach was pretty red and itchy from the cold. I had to get out of the shower and jump in the tub to warm back up. I felt better after a 10min. hot soak. Then on to the leftover chinese food.

It wasn't my hardest ride but not the easiest either. I just wanted to get some miles in so I was content to keep it to a medium intensity. I find it hard to go all out in the winter anyway.

Entire workout (147 watts):
Duration: 3:56:07 (4:05:41)
Work: 2071 kJ
TSS: 313.8 (intensity factor 0.896)
Norm Power: 179
VI: 1.22
Pw:HR: 9.29%
Pa:HR: 7.14%
Distance: 62.797 mi
Min Max Avg
Power: 0 756 147 watts
Heart Rate: 100 196 162 bpm
Cadence: 29 209 80 rpm
Speed: 2.2 34.1 16.0 mph
Pace 1:46 26:49 3:44 min/mi
Hub Torque: 0 454 68 lb-in
Crank Torque: 0 905 164 lb-in

Least I HTFU and got out there. Now we'll see if I can do it again tomorrow. If not I'll get on the rollers.

51 mile club ride through rolling Virginia countryside. I was the "ride leader" and led from the rear. four guys chose to go short and did about 37 miles, three of us went for the full ride. Ave. temp was 30 degrees F and high was 34. It was supposed to get warmer. It never felt like it did. My feet were very numb. I was only wearing toe warmers. There was a breeze from the bottom of my shoe. I was hoping I could get away with them but it was too cold. Hands were fine in polyester glove liners and regular cycling gloves. But they were freezing at the start. Took four miles to warm them up, which is what someone predicted.

No one wanted to stay at the rest stop long. All afraid of getting cold, so they left me. I left after eating some gels and caught them a few miles later where they had slowed for me. Nobody was trying to drop anybody on this ride.

Crappy gray skies. The sun would have been a welcome warmer.

Did a total of 63mi today. Longest one day ride in probably over a month or more. My club moved my usaul ride to 10:30 from it's usual 8am start due to the cold. Geared up the Serotta, freshly back on the active list after the new tires for my new wheels arrived in the mail on Friday. Rode to the start (8mi), rode the 43mi ride with the club, rode home. realized how close I was to a metric so rode around the neighborhood streets some to hit the 63mi mark. temp at the start was about 38-40, by the time I got home it was probably close to 60. Really glad I wore multiple layers that was fairly easy to adjust as things warmed up, or cooled off due to wind / sun / time / etc.

Our team manager is in town for the weekend; he lives in LA-ish most of the year. He refused to go for a ride with me today.

When I started, it was 22F. When I got done, it was 15F. Honestly, I can't say I blame him. If I lived there, I wouldn't set foot outside unless it was 50F or more.

I did call him a nancy-boy and told him he stinks of patchouli, though.

I had to look that up.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate description.

He doesn't partake in of that sort of thing, but he's a liberal, iBook on coffee shop table, iPhone rigged to earpiece, "oh yeah the west coast is toooootally sweet, Bra", sold his soul by moving out of the Midwest transplant.

So, I remind him of that every time I see him. So I tell him he reeks of patchouli, and ask him where he parked his VW Bus.

And nothing against the west coast (I hope to move to Oregon in a year or two) but I just like giving him a good ribbing when I can.

I've never lived in Oregon just visited. Not all of the west coast is the same just like Georgia is nothing like New York. Even cities as close as Los Angeles and San Diego (120 miles) are night and day different and worlds apart.
