Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay Light Action Vs Look Keo

From experience, which one would allow for greater power transfer?

I feel like Speedplay's Light Action have too much float, and would therefore be worst in terms of power transfer, especially when sprinting/climbing out of the saddle.

Thoughts?!?!

Power transfer worry with a pedal? That is a good one.

I'd rather have my pedal float than my knee joints.

I'd go wth Speedplay, strictly for the metal cleat plate. The Keos are all plastic, and wouldn't transfer a lick of power. Shocking, I know!

Ive ridden both. Im currently liking my Light Action pedals and Ive pretty much run the gambit. The KEO's were my least favorite of all of my pedals. The cleats are junk.

I use Speed Play pedals, but not the lite action. The float can not be adjusted. I would recommend the Speed Play Zeros at $125. They can be adjusted in 3 axis on the shoe, plus the float can be individually adjusted between the CW and CCW directions.

I've ridden both and will never go back to Look Keo Sprints.

Speedplay (I use Zeros, too, set @ factory setting) = Guaranteed not to pull out of pedal on a hard sprint if the hardware is set up per manufacturer's recommendations.

Keo Sprint: even set up correctly, you can unintentionally pop out from turning your foot just a hair too much--the Speedplays just seem to be more forgiving in this respect.

haven't used speedplays...but i got no issue with my Look Keo's...they work just like they're supposed (keeps me clipped in, haven't accidently clipped out when i didn't want to) and i feel no pain or discomfort...

pretty much all you can ask from a pedal...

I just retired my Speedplay Zeroes for a new set of Keos. I love the pedal, but I HATE the cleat. The float adjustment screws worm out its setting after a few rides, screws fall out all the time because you can't tighten the cleat too much (even with the loctite), and if you get mud/grit between the spring and the cleat, you're hosed until you take off the top plate and scrape out all the gunk from behind the spring.

I'm sure Keos have their own problems but at least the cleats are simple (and way cheaper).

Anyway, I know this is a pretty crappy sales pitch, but I need a second pair of Keos for my other bike. If anyone wants to trade their Keo carbons for Zeros with Ti spindles, let me know.

I have used Speedplay Light Action since their introduction 2.5 years ago. I like them a lot and have never had any problem with them. I have never accidently unclipped and no not notice the float at all when I pedal. I haven't used the Look Keos but I used the Shimano SPD-L pedals before I had Speedplay and hated them.

I have both, but have switched over to the Keo. I like the float on the LA, and I like being able to clip into either side. Basically I prefer the LA in most respects, except...

Keeping crap out of the cleats was just too much of a hassle. You really need to use cleat covers any time you're not on the bike, if you have to go on anything but pavement. I hate having to disassemble the cleats and oil them up all the time. Also the screw issue mentioned above.

and since i have never used speedplays, i cannot comment on them. Look are ok, but i like my sl pedals.

Power transfer really is different. One is LIGHT action and the other is Keo, even the names say so.

I switched to Keo after ten years on Speedplay. I prefer the feel of the Keos.

Both pedals do work however. They both have adequate float. But you do have to consider the inherent coolness of riding the pedal system endorsed by Uncle Pcad.

I have heard of people having problems keeping their Speedplay cleats clean but I never have. I have been riding Speedplay Light Action for 2.5 years and have never had to clean the cleats out even once. I do have cleat covers but almost never use them. However, I only ride on the road and never walk through mud. I have on occassion walked across grass or hard dirt and never had a problem with the cleats clogging up.

With Lockite, I have never lost a screw. Are you using Blue Lockite? Also, the plastic cleats of the Keos are about half the price, but last less than half the amount of time that the Speedplay cleats do. I changed my first set of cleats at 2 years. Even at 2 years I wasn't unclipping accidently at all. The issue I was having is that the float had become too easy. The cleats loosened up as the spring wore into the plastic plate. The last set of cleats I bought cost me $38.00 delivered.

A little twisting action of the feet due to pedal float will not cause power transfer loss. No worry for that.

Another tidbit that's often misunderstood: a little sway in the frame's bottom bracket area won't cause power transfer loss either (at least not enough to notice). Sometimes people work their panties into a twist for no reason.

SpeedPlay cleats will get dirty if you aren't careful, that is why it is important to use the cafe covers if you are not on the bike, regardless of what you are walking on. I just keep them in my jersey pocket.

Yes, the float adjusting screws will move if you don't use lock-tite, but as long as you check the lock-tite once in a while and reset the screw as as required you are fine. On the current set I just staked the treads. It is permanenat but I never adjust the float after I have it adjusted anyway.
