Sunglasses & Wind
I got back from a fast group ride today and noticed my eyes were pretty red. I wear contacts, and my current sunglasses just don't seem to be able to keep out the wind and dust. Are there any glasses out there that are really good at protecting the eyes?

i have a feeling its your contacts, not your sunglasses.
I wear contacts as well, and with cheaper brands have had the same problem.
Wear sunglasses that are tight-ish to your face, everyones face is diff, so nobody can really suggest the right pair for you.
I wear these though... [spy - diablo]

I tend to get allergic conjunctivitis, and I've had good luck with:
-Oakley M-Frames
-Specialized Helix Adaptalite
-Rudy Project Freeon
And I have a pair of Rudy Project Sport Mask Performance on the way--the effect of air blowing over the tops of your lenses and your view getting blocked by a low-riding frame is accentuated on the tri bike...

Bring along some of the single-use eye drops (e.g. Refresh) and use them during stops on your ride.

Lose the contacts, get some prescription sunglasses. You want frames and lenses with a lot of wrap, i.e. the frames and lenses curve to fit very close to your face. I get nice frames and dark single vision lenses for less than $100 at my local Costco or about the cost of some trendy plastic frame sunglasses.

none of my sunglasses are great. I have some tifosi's that work pretty well, but the specialized halfcourt's I own have cost me more than one contact. They dry up and pop out. This seems to happen during crit type situations or windy descents. Sort of like playing video games -- I just don't think I blink enough.

My Ryders are really good with that. They are also photochromatic, and only cost me $70.

Just throwing that out there.

Thanks for the feedback. The M-frame looks pretty good, but it's awfully expensive.
That's a great idea - I'm going to start doing that.
I wear Acuvue Oasis 2-week lenses - just to clarify, it's not that my eyes dried out...in fact they were quite teary. It's more that a lot of dust and grit got into my eyes, which I think caused the redness (which looks even worse today). So that's why I'm looking for glasses with better coverage.

best bang for buck glasses
Try MEC ( mountain equipment co-op ) as you are in Toronto. They have great cycling glasses like the expresso for $12 bucks for the frame and $6 for lenses. ( interchangeable lenses ). They are light, fit close to the brow and best of all are cheap.

Well right now I use MEC Phoenix Sunglasses - they're good, but there's tons of space above and below the lens where wind gets in. And they're really not as big as the picture makes them out to be.
I'm going to check MEC for some bigger sunglasses - they generally have good prices.

I use the old reliable Oakley M frames (not the folding arm version). They offer great wind protection, but I also like the way I can slide them into my helmet vents if I want to ride without them for a while.

Bolle Edge. Fits medium to large face shapes. There is a Micro Edge too but is for small face shapes.
Get the Modulator series which is photochromic. These are Amber, but there is also a Vermillion. I think the Amber is perfect for road cycling and gives the broadest range of light transmission. Terrific shape and coverage for blocking light, wind, and debris.

After loosing and breaking several good pairs of cycling sunglasses, I've been buying inexpensive Solar Comfort Polarized sunglasses from Walmart for about $15. They provide good coverage so the wind doesn't annoy your eyes and are tight enough so you can look up in the aero position without the frame getting in the way. And you can try them before you buy them.

I've given up on expensive sunglasses and use safety glasses exclusively. Less than $10 for bifocals and provide excellent protection from wind and, of course, flying critters.

Anyone have any experienced recommendations for websites with good prices (abt $100 or less) for getting prescription sunglasses?
I have a pair of Oakleys that I have used for many years while driving, but they are very dark, and I would like something of lighter tint.
