Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are you doing the BA? I'm not.
The irony in this is that I mailed off my BA Rollover form on our way out there. I'm not in any shape to do BA this year. Okay, I could do it, but I wouldn't be competitive and I don't like seeing my name that far down the results list. I'll go out there and climb all day though...lol.

We went up alone, George rode his fixed gear and kept coming back for me on the climbs. I was just out there trying to get some motivation back and enjoy riding again. We did see Caligurl and SirLance in the parking lot at Mills Creek when we got back there.

Went to a custom cruiser show and ride today.

Saw a bicycle on a bicycle...so you can ride while you ride...

I rode with Cali at the Angeles Crest century ( I wasn't registered, I just wanted to say hi to her and some others) and she told me that SirLance wasn't riding at all, at least for a while. Sounds like he started again. Oh, she was riding very strong that day, too.

He told me that he didn't ride from June until January and that he'd put on weight. I wouldn't have guessed it, he still looked great.

In addition to my 50 yesterday, I went into the shop that did my fitting and we dropped the stem to level (was angled up quite a bit) and I did another 27 miles into downtown DC to the Earth Day concert and back. The stem angle felt SO much better! I guess I'm progressing.

This is also the first time i've ridden a decent amount the day after a "long" ride (for me) so I'm happy that I'm getting my general fitness up as well as getting my nutrition, hydration and electrolyte needs dialed in and figured out (thank goodness for Hammer!)

Saturday -- 90 miles with 9560 feet of gain (the first 60 had 8800 feet o gain) on my fixed gear. The 30 mile descent sucked.

Sunday-- 122.5 miles with 5000 feet of gain

I faded pretty bad today at about mile 85. I just didn't get enough calories in after our ride yesterday. The fixed gear takes a lot of calorie burn on the climb and of course I had to pedal all of the 30 mile descent.

Saturday: Rode my first double century ever - Devil Mountain. 206 miles, 20,000+ ft of elevation. Finished in 16:10 with about 14:05 moving. Now I know what suffering is all about (see mile 125-165).

Sunday: SS mtb around town.... and a long nap.

Took a longer ride to take a break from my otherwise interval every other day routine on saturday. took sunday off. This is pretty much the biggest climb I would reasonably ride out and back too.

I had a nice 28 mile ride today. It was the first time that I actually felt comfortable enough on my seat to ride that far. I felt pretty good hammering the whole time.

Wow. Way to go!

I'm curious what your post-ride thoughts are regarding gears and tech. What will you change for the next double?

Went on a little weekend vacation to Colorado, did 75 miles 35 were climbing. Did 4500 ft of climbing topping out at almost 9000 ft. Incredible ride, I ride in flat FL. I will never view cycling the same as I did climbing in the mountains.

The next one I signed up for is the Terrible Two up in Sonoma & Napa County. I'm going to schedule a day trip up there to drive the course before hand as many of the climbs have steep sections for extended distances. I'm familiar with some of them but want to know exactly what's coming up at all points during the ride, including the sharp descents. This ride is always a scorcher with temps in the 100's so I'm looking forward to not carrying around warm clothing all day.

I'm planning on bringing the steel Fuso because it rides like velvet and I want plush at mile 150. I've had a compact, regular double and triple on it so I'm used to how it feels with different gearing. I'll go with the 53/42/30 up front and most likely a 12-26 in the back. A 30x26 is slightly easier than a 34x29 which I have used a lot in the past on my Pedal Force. The 30x23 and 30x21 are also slightly lower than 34x26 & 34x23. The 42 is very handy for all the junk in between climbs and it's the ring that makes the triple worth the slight weight penalty for my style of riding.

I've also tried a 53/39/28 setup up front with the mindset of using the middle ring for all but the steeper climbs. Downshifting to the 39 and 28 was fine but upshifting is bad due to lack of pins on the middle ring. I've also discovered there is a point where a low gear becomes too low. In my case it's about 30 gear inches (30x26 or 34x29). There is a local climb here that is one of the hardest in the Bay Area, Bohlman + On Orbit. For kicks I wanted to see how it felt with really low gears. Sure my cadence was high but I was getting nowhere in a low of 28x29 or 28x26 as well as a higher heart rate.

did a 24 hour fleche startign at 6 PM on friday. only 380km long, so we had to pace it.

riding through the night is tough, but with four other people the time goes way faster.
