Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another (semi)noob question bibs -vs- bibs

or, shorts -vs- shorts.

In shopping for shorts/bibs, I see a really wide range in pricing. $65 - $300 (or more).

What does spending more money actually get you when buying shorts/bibs? The fabrics, I'm sure, are different but does the more expensive gear give you better, or higher quality, padding?

As a reasonably new rider, and as I have begun to build my gear, I've opted for the lesser expensive (not cheapest) gear. Just curious what more money will actually get me?

TIA

Ed

Better fit and better chamois.

I have $$ bibs and $$$ bibs, I can do long rides in both but I'm happier in the $$$ ones.

Thanks, that's kind of what I thought.

Probably time to move up from the $$ bibs to the $$$ bibs.

I would say you gain quality up to about $150. After that you pay more for the name and not as noticeable increases in quality.

i just picked up a pearl izumi bib at REI, about 125 pricetag and it feels awesome. I shopped around for a bit because i wanted something with good quality and a good price. I also got the 20% off for members so another plus.

Same for me, and none of the cheaper shorts are terrible but when you get a bib short with the perfect chamois you appreciate the difference.

For ~$150 you could have got Assos, much better.

I have both and I can't say I like the Assos better than the Pearl Izumi. Could be because I'm 6'4" and 260 lbs. The straps on the Assos seem to want me to be shorter.
