Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Century yesterday only had 5k of climbing, but some really stellar views along the NY/CT border. Part of the fun is seeing different places and varying terrain.

At Indy, did they have something on TV on jumbo-trons surrounding the course? Something like a Monty Python marathon running on the TV's would at least give you something to do as you turn lap after lap.

Unrelated story: my hoops team in Jr. High had a bad free throw shooting game. The next practice, everyone shot 10 free throws. For each miss, you got 2 laps. So you'd shoot, run, shoot again, run again. I think I ran about 5 miles that night...all in laps around the gym. Woulda been better if the coach just sent us outside in the middle of winter and told us to run one lap around town for the same distance. BTW, I was a crappy free throw shooter.

There's a few organized centuries down here in southeast Florida that are flat... flatter... flatest!!! The ONLY "hills" here are the overpasses over the major highways.

Oh yeah... and the landfills, too. But we don't ride over them too much... on roadbikes, anyway.

very well could be but last night I was thinking I could do my first century by riding the 2 mile circle where I live 50 times. If I didn't make it I would be home , if I needed a break I would be home ect ect.
But how boring would that be?

I was very surprised how there wasn't that much chatter. I talked more after with some of the guys. It wasn't that much work, just long. We sucked a lot of wheels that day. I was happy to do my part.

I did the 2007 Seagull Century at 20.13 mph, finishing in 4:58. I had pacelines of opportunity part of the time, but it was really just two of us for a lot of the ride. About 10 miles out, we were both really tired, thinking, "We'll get under 5 hours next year", but then we got 4:58 on the computer at the finish line. That's moving time, but we only stopped once at the beach rest stop for about 5 minutes.

Seagull is a good one for a fast century, since it includes dozens of feet of climbing . Wind can be a problem, though, and so can the crowds unless you start early.

The goal this fall is to get under 5 hours total time.

I thought about that once, and decided that it would be too easy to quit... and that I might do so out of sheer boredom.

101 miles in 6 hrs 29 minutes, Record for me. Never boring there.
I think you passed me 10 times?

I'm not sure how many times but I did recognize you and your yellow bike, I'd have loved to have stopped to introduce myself but the paceline waits for no-one.

Or you could have just stopped to say hi and then waited for about 9 minutes for the paceline to come by again.

What kit did you have on? Were you wearing a Lilly jersey? I remember a few yellow bikes.

Well, I did a mostly flat (4000') century yesterday in 6:37 riding time (average 16.0 mph). Think a goal of 6 hours is too ambitious for Cool Breeze?

Well it's not completely flat. Based on who you believe, it's either 3500' or 4100'. There is some climbing after the 2nd rest stop before heading over to the lunch break at 55 miles. My best at CB is 6:06 rolling time. You'll be faster than me, no doubt. Have to grab your wheel!

As it happens, I'll be coming off a vacation out of town as well.

Well, yesterday's ride mentioned above was 6:37 for 106 miles, and had right about 4000'. CB is 102 miles, which adjusts my time to about 6:20 so working together might be in our strategy.

But yeah, I'll consider it a mostly flat century after last month's ride over Angeles Crest and back, which was 106 miles with over 12,000' of climbing.
