Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shipping wheel set from USA to Australia

Say I was to get a custom wheelset from someone in America, what sort of shipping do you reckon it would be to get them to Sydney Australia. I don't know how to work out your American Shipping website (only Australia post).

I have found thaat the USPS is the cheapest and best way to ship Internationally.

I have sent many things to friends in other countries, even OZ, at reasonable rates. You can go to their website, and calculate rates. Priority Mail is usually the cheapest way to go.

I have sent many things as warrantee replacements, and/or, worthless gifts. (If worthless, insurance is the same)

Never a problem.

I agree. I sold some wheels to someone in S. Africa. Maybe it was about $60 US ? Go to USPS.com and you should get a decent estimate if you enter the box dimensions & weight.

Different shipping companies have different rates based on the size AND weight of boxes - depending on the shipping carrier, it may be cheaper to ship the wheels in separate boxes.

when ever I have previously looked at shipping wheels from the US of A to Australia the costs have been astronomical. Don't commit to anything until you have VERY firm prices on shipping and are prepared to pay it. Maybe the prices have come down again (I doubt it) but they have been ridiculous.

Thanks everyone and thank Anthony. Its good to have someone with previous experience. But what about good wheelbuilders in Australia? (pref:sydney). Ones that may be able to incorporate a PT...

In Australia I think we still have a tradition of local wheel building at many local bike stores although some builders would be better than others. You could try Velocity Australia, https://www.velocitywheels.com/ They will do custom one off wheel builds for customers through a local bike store that deals with them. You can send hubs to them and they will build the wheels for you using there own rims of course. You could also talk to Paul Hillbrick, https://www.hillbrick.com.au/ in Sydney. Paul is a custom frame builder but has people who build wheels for him.

I'm shipping out a frameset today, $75 to Melbourne. I never charge extra to cover Paypals normal fee but I do charge an extra 4% to cover Paypals 'currency conversion' fee.
You can forget about a USPS tracking number as well. They're a joke and useless.
Maybe they are being more relaxed about sizes now. For a while it was the size of a wheel or frame box that was leading to astronomical shipping costs. I was getting quotes of $200+ to ship wheels or frames from the US of A. I'd still want to double check it before I trusted those costs.

If you note that it is a "Warrantee Replacement" there is usually no tax....... and you can still insure it for full value.

I sold a frame to a gentleman in Melbourne and need to ship it. The box dimensions are less than 108 total inches but the quotes I received were out of this world. Over $400 from everyone - UPS, USPS, Fedex, DHL, etc. and there was no "economy" option. I did find a reputable 3rd party shipper - International Parcel Services that does volume shipping with DHL to quote me $250.

I'd be VERY interested to know of any less expensive options.

I edited my previous response.

Somewhere along the way I made and error. There's NO way to economicly ship a frame or wheels to Australia. The box cutoff is 78" length plus girth, I assumed it was 108"
