Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone know if Selle San Marco makes a wider saddle?

I am building up my new Cannondale Super Six Hi-Mod and am used to riding a Specialized Toupe Team Saddle 143.

I like the look of the Selle San Marco Aspide Carbon FX saddle. It seems that almost all of San Marco saddles are 130 wide.

Anyone have experience with the fit of this saddle compared to Specialized saddles?

Rolls and Regal are 143 and 149 respectively. I can't tell you how they compare to specialized saddles.

don't know about the aspide model, but the aformentioned rolls and regal models are more 'full-formed saddles' - they are more anatomical in the sense that they fit your entire bottom and not just your sit bones.

If you are looking for a wider saddle with a fit similar to the toupe, check out the SKN model. It's about as wide as a Regal (~150mm) except the shape is much more flat and streamlined like the toupe. I previously used a Regal and switched to a SKN after wanting to get a lighter sleeker saddle and have had hardly any problems. Besides tweaking the fore/aft and angle of the saddle the SKN almost seems as comfortable as a Regal, and it's almost 200 g lighter

Wait, the Regal is wider than the Rolls? I have ridden a Rolls and while I like it, for higher mileage I was after something not as wide. From appearances, I always thought the Regal was the narrower of the two.

Any idea on how wide they are at the nose? My Rolls seems a bit wide for me at the nose.

Regal all the way. It's 147-149mm wide (depending on where you measure). I've got one for each bike.

I have the Selle San Marco SKN and I love it. When I did the ass bone sit test thing at the Specialized dealer they suggested the Toupe 143. I knew I wanted something with a cutout but didn't want to spend $150 for the Toupe so I tried the SKN instead. It's a 155mm and has more of a flatter profile. When PBK has them in stock you can get them for around $65. Not bad for a 200gr saddle that looks good.

This is far closer to the weight class of the Toupe. (170g vs SKN at 185g)

Shape is more important than width.
Shape is more important than weight.
It's dumb to buy a saddle solely based on weight if you've never tried that particular saddle.

Well said. The saddle is not where you want to be cutting weight, you want to be comfortable

I can tolerate a 143 Specialized Phenom but my ass just could not do on a 130 Aspide (have not tried the Toupe). I'm on the skinny side, go figure.

Another vote for the SKN. I researched it to be as close to my Brooks B17s, and it is around 150mm wide... suited to 85kg-plus riders, and light-as... the rails flex with the two wings... and it's leather-clad. I got it new for around $100 Australian, so it was well worth it.

I have removed it.

In its place currently sits a Brooks Swallow Ti, which is only slightly heavier, and about the same width. And about 150% the price. If it doesn't work, I'll put the SKN back on.

(Disclosure: The Brooks is there for long-distance rides, was an indulgence as much as anything, and is not really a mark against the SKN. The SKN is OK for up to centuries, but I am uncertain above those distances).

Yeah, so I'm dumb in your eyes... but oddly enough, it all worked out... saddle width is as important, if not more so, than shape. The distance between the sitbones decides that.

Take a look at the Nashbar GR2. I have it and Rolls and Regal on other bikes. For me it has turned out that the wider the saddle, the more comfortable it is, so GR2 > Regal > Rolls.

IMHO saddles are one of a few items on a bike where weight is a minor consideration (assuming that you are not building up a racing bike but a club or recreational bike). You can get a San Marco Rolls with titanium rails and I would think the Regal would have that option too. I think you'll find that those who use either of these saddles are extremely happy with the fit and comfort they afford.

I don't know how either compare to Specialized saddles, but it's a moot point. Find something comfortable that fits you and simply enjoy it. You will ride more miles and more often.
