Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Now this is definitely what you want. She was on a mountain bike that day, but that's only because with the rest of the pics she was taking that day of her headlights and bottom bracket, being on a public road wouldn't have gone well for her.

I'd definatly advise against buying used. Everything will be loose and won't feel as good to ride. You'll only end up upgrading it soon anyway.

Make sure to relube if she starts to feel a bit rough when your really hammering it, and try to keep her clean, you'll be surprised how much difference it will make and giving her a rub down can be surprisingly satisfying.

Don't let other people have a ride though. They'll just end up wanting one and she'll be much less exclusive.

The ladies need to start a thread of their own so they can put the menfolk in their place... am sure their build requirements would be very interesting.

Personnally, I prefer the vintage models. Nishiki made a Mature model that came out in the early 70's. I'm looking for one that's in good condition with only one previous owner. The curve of the handle bars is very important to me.

I just cant afford a good looking one. Seems like, if you get one that looks good, you end up just throwing money at it to keep it happy. Then its always out cruising around the mall. The constant attention, "does this chain make my bottom bracket look big?" Giveme a break. Then one day you come home and find it chained to someone elses bike rack. tragic.

No matter which frameset you choose or if it is pre-loved or new, if anything goes wrong, warranty will be controlled by TREK, but they won't honour it under any circumstance, even if you are the original owner........

Make sure that she understands if you like to ride with groups. Some people aren't all that comfortable riding with 20 or 30 other people at the same time.

You see a lot of fat old guys with very expensive late model versions. Often they are just compensating for a lack of ability to perform by spending a lot of money. Its best to avoid falling into that trap.

Minor thread-jack: but I was thinking of going to Europe for a few months and I'm wondering if I should bring mine from the US or just rent there. Boxing them up is a pain, and with airline fees what they are, it seems crazy not to rent.

On the other hand, the one I have fits me well, and you never know what you'll find used.

I'm thinking Amersterdam or Copenhagen, where the culture is pervasive. Heck, I hear they even have cheap rentals all lined up with no deposit needed. Drop in a few euro/crowns and have at it.

Anyone have any experience here?

^No experience on the rentals, but the free ones seem to be considerably better units. They're available in many different styles, and often with far fewer miles than the pay-for-use models.
If you're curious about build details, many are stripped down, and displayed mid-summer at the various beaches and green spaces.

If you go to Europe, be careful of those bikes. Some will seem to fit surprisingly well despite having ridden it for a very short amount of time, and you'll be tempted to bring one back home with you. Then it will want you to fill out all kinds of forms so it can stay here. Next thing you know, it's off being ridden by someone else.... Similar to those mail-order bikes from Eastern Europe.
