Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

can you put a 10-speed campy cassette on an 8-speed hub?

is it possible to put a 10-speed 12x25 campy cassette on a '99 campy shamal (with an 8-speed cassette)?

this post appears to suggest I can, with a new lockring (unless I am misunderstanding, which is quite possible)

That wheel probably has a 9+sp hub as opposed to 8-sp. 8sp cassettes will fit the older wheels, but the 9/10/11sp cassettes won't. My guess is that it will.

I have 2 sets of '99 Rolf wheels, and currently have a 9sp cassette on one and an 11sp cassette on the other. I also have Campy wheels from '06. They are 8sp, and won't take the newer cassettes.

seems like it's definitely 8-speed, supposedly laced to a C-Record hub, stock off a '99 litespeed:

the link from my first post suggests that some time in the mid-90's campy changed the hub so that new cassettes don't fit old hubs. I'm not sure whether I might find this to be the case here.

That's not a '99 Shamal. The '99 Shamal has HPW hubs that take straight-pull spokes without the elbow that your spokes clearly have. See attached. Based on this, I would guess that it's possible to have the 8-speed freehub body, which according to the Branford page, does not take 9/10/11-speed cassettes.

Campy 8 speed cassettes fit 8 speed as well as 9-10-11 speed hubs.
Campy 9-10-11 speed cassettes do not fit 8 speed hubs.

Although you can put an 8 speed cassette on a 9/10/11 spline, if the cassette body is made of aluminum
like most genuine Campy hubs, the shallow engagement will quickly ruin the splines.

I agree that the wheel shown is not a '99 and could be as old as '95. 9 speed came out in '97 and a Shamal from that year would have the new 9/10/11 speed spline, made of aluminum. If the cassette body is steel, it's a '95-'96.
