Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

try to shrug it off and don't take it personally

school kids have to develop their judgment. I remember saying something to a girl while we were at our lockers and I have no recollection of why I said what I said (7th grade). the music teacher called me aside a scolded me, without yelling and asked me if I knew the meaning of what I said, and I fained ignorance. now I only say it when I mean it.

too bad you couldn't catch up to the bus and talk to the driver and report the kid. there should have been consequences. that kid hasn't learned his lesson yet. someday he might just say the wrong thing to the wrong person and get a punch in the head.

I know it's sometimes easy to snap when you take crap unexpectedly , but you got to get a little thicker skinned.. Yep, I've snapped a couple times. High Schoolers's have been my most common source of crap. One even successfully spat at me(Knee) at a light.. . I've had it worse. I was boarding a train in Klamath Falls, Oregon.. Riding past a trailer park, some kids started chasing me, said they were going to beat the crap out of me.. I was dressed in street clothes.. My bike was faster than they could run, and I got to the train station where they gave up their attack. Totally unprovoked. So , expect the worse. Don't screw with them if you can help it. Some are nuts and you just might find that they have some kind of weapon..

What's even worse is when you're on a mountain bike trail where you think none of your friends would walk, and you're summit-ing the giant climb, breathing heavily, sweating heavily. And you're in your bike shorts. And there's one of the popular girls with a bunch of her friends going for a leisurely stroll.

But, we have a road bike club at school and every Friday we roll out of the gate in our kits. It gets some laughs from the people in cars, but then they realize we're going faster than traffic.

I'm so glad I've reached the age where I no longer care whether high school kids think I'm cool or not.

Oh god. At least you weren't sweaty, tired, in bike shorts, and walking up said hill.

I don't really care what the snickering dudes say. I could beat them in a crit if they wanted to challenge me because of my "panzy" shorts. The girls on the other hand...

Every once in a while I get reminded that my lot in life truly has improved, and markedly so, following my escape from high school. I can assure you, unless you're a total meathead, you'll want nothing to do with these 'popular girls' once you meet your first genuinely interesting female in college.

I know that, and it's not like I socialize with them, but word gets around school, and often skewed for dramatic effect. Luckily nobody I know closely really cared as they know I'm a bike geek.
