Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I couldn't help but laugh...

I was heading back home today after a very nice ride when some nice young lady cut me off (right hook style).

She then stopped at the green light and her first words were:

"You think you own the road or something?!..."

Ah, the irony...

At first I chuckled. I then tried to explain the rules of the road to her, but she wouldn't listen. Typical, closed-minded cager. She cursed me out and drove off.

Thought so. Not a good idea to lie about those kinds of things in BF, the truth always comes out in the end.

A woman driving her grandma passed me today and signaled to make a right turn into a shopping center. I was watching carefully (after reading all these car vs. bike threads) and moderating the speed.

She actually stopped on the road and let me pass her before turning into the parking lot. Granted, the road was empty but it was still a good feeling.

Be careful passing on the right in this manner. You never know when the driver will decide to turn right. I usually pass them on the left or hang out behind the car.

Happens to me all the time, although (as idcruiserman suggested) I usually try to fade back behind them and around the left. Once I'm directly behind them, they usually know it's ok to turn and I'm in the clear no matter what they do.

That's happened to me twice in the last few months, and on the same stretch of road in Santa Monica. The last time a li'l black Mercedes took quick a right in front of me. I locked-up the rear wheel and it fish-tailed to my left and I had to steady myself by placing my hand on the side-panel of the car. She kept on driving down the Santa Monica Pier and I was about to continue on my way, but then I realized that the driver wasn't going so far that I wouldn't be able to catch him or her and tell him or her what (s)he had just done and how my cat-like reflexes had just saved us both a huge headache. She was receptive and I was happy that I explained it in a relatively cool demeanor. Yeah, she was blonde--not that that matters.

Learn how to stop your bike? front brake > rear brake, you could've been injured due to your own incompetence. But I guess we all kind of yearn to be wronged by motorists, and the closer they come to touching us the better the story, right?

the OC is the worst for cycling. drivers act like they've never seen a cyclist before (okay, so their actions could be intentional). our group got egged last week near HB. the kids hit 5/6 of us, shows this wasn't their first time!
