Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

wheel choice dilemma (checkmate or williams)

Getting a new wheelset in the next week or two, but dont know what company to go with. Williams makes a good set for $999, i was thinking about going for the system 58 (full carbon clincher). or the checkmate 50mm full carbon clincher or full carbon tubular ($600-700 with pads and skewers). They would be used for racing only, and maybe a group ride once or twice. Checkmate has a three year warranty on their rims, and are i think 800 grams lighter. checkmate is a really small company that was just made in 2009 so i dont really know what to think about their sets, although everybody says they are good.
anybody have experience with any of these wheelsets or companies? im trying to get a set on a budget.

A guy I've ridden with a few times has a set of Williams System 30s. He seems to really like them, and told me that he forgot to lock-down his front wheel on his roof-rack and lost it within a few weeks of purchase. He told Williams about it, and they sent him a replacement wheel at a greatly reduced cost.

I think the wheelset weight difference is more like 320 g ... still alot but not sure of the spoke count on the Checkmates. The Williams is 8MM deeper and rated up to a 225lb rider so they are likely to be stiff / sturdy. I have a Williams wheelset but not the one your looking at. I was very impressed with how responsive they were to inquiries and the build quality of the wheelset I purchased was very good. Also really like the hybrid ceramic beraings in their hubs. Williams has been around awhile and has a great reputation and outstanding customer service. Can't go wrong with Williams.
