Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yesterday I learned not to go attack the longest steepest climb of the day when my riding partner didn't bring a spare tube and gets a flat at the bottom of the hill behind me.

I definitely need two days of recovery in between hard rides in order to feel strong.

My 37 year old newb self bought my first road bike today and went on a 21 mile ride this afternoon. I learned that I am more out of shape than I ever imagined and that sunscreen is your friend.

Riding with a saddle that is too high can cause leg cramps.

Cramps really suck.

I can breathe a lot easier now that my handlebars are lower and my stem is longer.

I have long legs, a short torso and long arms; bike fitting may involve tweaking.

That I should have taken one of the bottles with Gatorade instead of the two with water, instead of being nice to my boyfriend who is a seasoned rider, while I'm just starting.

Come to think of it, he should have made sure I had one.

that waiting on a slower rider (my mom) in the pouring down rain isn't terribly fun but riding with her is.

Does it really? I have always thought muscle fatigue and my lack of stretching are the likely culprits of leg cramps and I have been getting them lately minutes before the end of my long rides

yes, it can cause cramps but so can a lot of things...in my case it was saddle height

Yesterdays commute a couple of things:

1) I really need to check the air in my tires before I leave my house.
2) My frame mount pump sucks.
3) I need to practice with the CO2, because the few times I've used them I seem to waste about a 1/3 of a cartridge.

Luckily there is Performance bike Shop a couple of miles from my office along my commute route that had a good floor pump to borrow.

Save it, on

4) That I can be lame at times

That is not something new.
