Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Easton EA90 SL vs. Aero

Hey I'm looking to buy a new wheelset in the upcoming weeks. Say the price is the same which would you guys choose? According to Easton's site the EA90 Aeros are only 15gs heavier but the SL's have more spokes making them stronger but the Aero's have deeper rims to help add to their strength. I am 6' 210 going to be under 200 in the 190-195 range this summer. I dont race currently but am looking at trying out some races this summer so mostly just cruising around on ~30-40 mile rides. They will be going on a CAAD9 4 for background info. Thanks, Greg

Either set you choose is going to be fantastic, I'm a die hard Easton guy, but in your situation I'd def choose the stronger wheelset.

I think either will be good. Like fauxto nick, I like Easton quite a bit, their customer service is very good. I suggest actually calling or emailing their wheel department and they might give you more info. As far as I can tell, the rims are deeper in the aero set, and fewer spokes, while the SLs use more spoks with a shallow rim up front and I think a 25mm in the rear. I believe that both are using the R4 hubs, and neither comes standard with ceramic bearings (as the SLX does)

But which set would be the stronger set? They kinda seem like they even each other out with the Aeros having a deeper rim but less spokes and the SLs having more spokes but a shallower rim profile. And thanks for the contacting Easton suggestion I'll do that.

Also, would the EA90 SLX even be an option for me at my size?

What are you using them for? At your weight, I would go stronger, vs. lighter and aero. Contact psimet and ask for a quote. Be sure to include your stats. He'll give you a recommendation on custom build for that weight.

Yeah I already contacted him and at the price he quoted me I'm looking around at other options at a similar price.

Go for the SLs. I'm 155 lbs and I can brake rub my aero's. I do however run the pads pretty close to the rim.

I am in the process of buying to compliment the EC90 aero the EC70SL. My LBS just took in a pair Easton EC90SL and imho they are a nice compliment to the aero good rim depth and if they are as good as other Easton wheels should be real durable

I really like my EA90 SLX's but your weight is right on the edge of their recommended weight (I'm 160 lbs). You may want to get the SL version, there isn't that much of a weight difference.

If you think your going to drop 10 to 15 pounds than maybe the SLX's will be ok.

Weight difference depends on the year, 2009/2010 EA90 SLXs are under 1400g I believe (just barely) as they're using the R4SL hubs (Ceramic bearings). Earlier EA90SLXs are 1478g or so, with the SL being about 50g more or something. For the earlier versions I believe that the only different is the spoke config (18/24 on the SLX, 24/28 on the SL)

Im curious what the going rate is for the Easton ea90 Aeros because I posted a deal off of some webpage doing them for $445 in the middle of February.

Aren't these close to $800?

By the way, I am loving them so far! I came from CXP 22's!

SO SMOOTH! Hills are easier for sure. haha

My belief is that the EA90 Aero rims aren't deep enough to give much aerodynamic advantage. I haven't ridden them specifically, but I've ridden other rims of similar depth and been thoroughly unimpressed. As a result, I bought the EA90 SL wheelset. Lighter weight and more spokes seemed like a good deal when I was up around 190lbs. YMMV...
