Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

clamp on to braze on

so will a braze on work if the FD on my CAAD 9 is a clamp on? I know absolute nothing about these two, and I'm trying to learn, but I want to buy a new gruppo and all the sram stuff seem to be braze on. I do plan on having my lbs to the install.

Yes. You just need to buy a braze-on adaptor.

SRAM makes front derailleurs with different clamp sizes... I'm actually looking at a few on Ebay right now that are 34.9mm

thanks!! I haven't looked at any with clamp sizes yet, but would assume my lbs has any necessary adapter.

BTW, what the heck does "braze" on mean anyway? Is braze some type of a weld? what is "braze"???

If the don't stock it, they should be able to order it pretty easily. Shouldn't be more than $15 or so.

Brazing is a type of metal joining that's similar to soldering but hotter. The two things you want to join don't melt, instead you melt a filler metal like bronze or silver between the two. It's how many steel bikes were/are made. It's also used to attach features to the bike such as cable guides, dropouts, and hangars.

"Braze-on" front derailleurs are designed to attach to a bracket which is part of the frame. Since this bracket was brazed on to the frame back in the steel days, they were referred to "braze-on" derailleurs. With carbon and aluminum bikes the bracket isn't brazed, it's epoxied or welded, but the terminology is leftover from before.
