Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Threaded freewheel/Cassette on flip flop wheel?

Hi,

Just windering if I can install a threaded freewheel on a flip flop wheel? I am building a bike for the GF and she wants the color of those track/fixed wheelset but wanted a multi gear.

Will appreciate any help.

The freewheel is thread on, yes, but the hub is not setup correctly to fit a multi-speed freewheel. Just buy a nice old freewheel hub on eBay and have it built with whatever groovy rim your girlfriend likes. It shouldn't be expensive.

Thanks. If I buy a flip flop wheel and have a shop replace the hub, how much approximately is the cost?

No idea. Just ask whatever shop you'd have build it. If you buy a pre-built wheel, though, you'll be paying for a hub and spokes that you probably can't use. You might be better off just buying the parts.

Also, does your girlfriend's bike use more than 7 cogs in the rear? Freewheels (mostly) only have 7 cogs or less. 8 cogs and up usually uses a cassette hub.
