Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Few things are hotter than a chick on a bike or a surfboard.
I really don't care if they are better or worse than me, I just like to see it.

Enjoy

1. a LOT of people don't like being passed by ANYONE. It's a matter of an over-inflated ego and overly competitive nature, not necessarily a sexist thing.

2. When it comes to cute women a lot of guys feel the need to show off, in the hope that she will immediately fall madly in lust at his obvious male dominance and want to have a Penthouse Forums encounter with him ASAP.

Some of you folks are reading into the situation... Maybe the guy was doing his own thing (intervals), maybe he was using you guys like a carrot for training motiviation, maybe he really was trying to get by you two because of the girl..

If it bothers you that much why didnt you just ask him?

He passed us initially, then we passed him about 10 miles later when he was doggin' it up a hill, he passed us again on the flats and then we passed him again on another hill.

Well...on this week's ride, after a long climb, we started gaining on a rider ahead of us. We passed him and dang if about 30 seconds later, he passes us back, practically at a sprint. My riding partner, Michelle, just starts shaking her head. I pulled up next to her and she says "Sometimes I wish I could just hide my ponytail so they can't tell I'm a girl!". Given she's the daughter of some friends, I thought, but did not say, "It ain't the ponytail that gives it away!"

So, the guy makes a turn well ahead of us and we continue on. About five miles later, we're on a different road and here comes the same guy, blowing past us...then after about 100 feet, he slows again and we match his pace for another mile or two before he turns off again.

I've been passed by plenty of girls/women out on the road. I don't feel like less of a man because of it....old, maybe...but not less of a man. Is the male ego really that fragile (note...rhetorical question)?
I'm sure a lot of it is ego but sometimes you get those who just like to chase since someone passing them becomes a new challenge especially if they're riding alone. I definitely like to chase because of the reasons stated above but I usually chat the person up for a bit and offer to pull so it doesn't look like I'm trying to show them up.

It doesn't bother me...I'm just making an observation. It bothers my female riding partner...so next time I'll send her up to ask.

So, I decided on a mix of the two; I checked them out as I was coming up to them, said hello, remarked that they were better dressed than I for the cool morning so near the ocean, and kept on going.
I had that situation a couple years ago on our 3.1 mile veloway loop. I had been slowly catching a woman over about a 1/2 mile and couldn't help notice her fitness level and the fit of her PI shorts (sugar shorts?). I continued to catch her at about a 2-3 mph differential until I finally caught her, lingered until I thought she might be uncomfortable, then passed her with a "hello!". About a hundred yards further, she passed me back, so I thought to myself, "well...I guess she doesn't mind me on her wheel, so I'll just stay here!". Then on a short rise, she slowed, so I pulled up next to her and mentioned the weather (smoooooooth). Turns out she was new to the area and this was her first ride in Austin...so we spent the next lap talking about places to cycle, with me wishing I was 25 years younger and single!

I was out doing a loop of Folsom Lake last week and passed the same guy 4 times. Passed him once on the climb out of the canyon, then I took a detour up Foresthill Rd just for fun. Passed him again on the bridge. Stopped at an AM/PM for a coke and snickers. Passed him again in Auburn. Got lost trying to find the road to Folsom. Passed him a fourth time in Granite Bay.

The last time I felt like such a dork I considered pulling off and going another route home. He probably went home and posted on BF about how some poseur kept passing him.

Dear Penthouse Forums, I never thought it would happen to me. I was riding my bike on the MUP last Saturday and had just stopped for a break, pull up my socks and take a deep swig of hateraide, when I saw the most beautiful woman pass me on her pink Trek road bike.
Her helmet matched her skin tight lycra jersey, which she had unzipped down to her navel, and she had those special shoes that lock onto the bike so I knew she was fast (and I love fast women). Her skin was supple and glistening with sweat and my eyes soaked up every inch as she approached. When she passed me she gave me a look that said "If you catch me, you can have me".
I immediately grabbed my bike, popped the kickstand and gave pursuit. Initially she slowed and then, just when I was about to overtake her, she gently pulled away. I pushed myself harder to catch her and was finally able to position myself right behind her. It was heaven, The sound of her heavy breathing, her undulating thighs, and the smell of her sweat only served to fuel my need for this cycling goddess......

You guys can finish the rest, I'm going to go for a bike ride....

Enjoy

I had some moron do this to me yesterday. I was just going my usual pace and doing some steady state intervals. I passed this guy going up a short hill and then proceded to start a 5 min interval. I was holding steady about 26-27 mph and after about 2 miles I just happened to look back and he was slowly catching me. I continued to hold my speed. This isn't a race. So he passes me, gets in front of me and slows down, right about the time my interval ended. I just followed him about 3 feet off his wheel. A few moments later, he starts jigging right, then jigging left, as if we were about to contest a sprint in the last 300 meters of a race! <laughs> I was thinking to myself, "WTF?". So about that time he turns around and says "get off my wheel, I ain't giving you no free ride". I was like "Dude, I'm 3-4 feet behind you, I'm not riding your wheel, if I was riding your wheel I'd be less than 3 inches off your wheel". So he starts cussing at me, acting as if he's going to try to punch me or something. Besides that, he deliberately passed me and once he caught me, got in front of me and SLOWED down. All I could say was "You're unreal, what an <expletive deleted>, how does it feel to be a tool?" As soon as I said that, I turned right to pick up a pedestrian bridge and he carried on... while giving me the bird. He looked like he was roid raging... Never ever had that happen before, but whatever. heh

That's really unfortunate. Some people are just angry. I've met so hostile a cyclist. I would think such a meeting would really take the fun out of a ride.

Yeah, I understand if you wanted to start a discussion about how guy's egos make them treat women cyclists, or athletes in general. But the original story is basically what happens every single ride and I wonder if you only noticed it because either your pace was different or because having her there made you more aware of it.

I'm sure there's a guy ego thing at some level, but it also happens in purely guy groups. Some folks just think it's a good idea to be uber-competitive all the time and think they're getting the best workout by just trying to pass every person they see out there. Never mind if they're going for a 1 hour ride and the person ahead is 5 hrs into their ride - they're going to try and catch them!

I pass a fair number of folks when I ride the PCH in SoCal, and even though I can be uber-competitive (when it counts) myself, I hate possibly offending folks that I'm passing. Unless I'm sure I can make a solid pass that won't be answered, I'll usually sit back a few bike lengths just to gauge speed to make sure that if I do make the pass, I'll stay out in front.

I also can't tell you how many roadies in full kit who look like they're coasting easy home at the tail end of their ride (17-18mph on a flat) suddenly decide to go-full out when if I pass them while I'm hammering, and not only that, try to pretend it's easy by whistling a song as if it's no biggie. I doubt it's that easy when I'm hammering away at 25, if not 27+ mph on the flats. Invariably, these alleged monster riders are suddenly nowhere to be seen within less than 3 minutes of drafting me at that speed. All ego, all bluff.

I do think it would definitely be worse for women. In our local roadie club though, the few women who choose to ride on the weekend group ride are very strong and are definitely respected especially on the climbing. They're usually part of the front of the peloton, and they're allowed to stay there since they're strong enough to pull hard.

I do recall 2 weeks ago, a girl on a $1200 intro-level road bike, and no biking-specific clothing showed up, wearing a loose tech T-shirt and triathlon pants. She had 3 bottles on her bike, also screaming "triathlete" and she was very young, likely 19-20, amongst a 50 strong group of roadies aged 22-50. At first, a lot of roadies tried to get in front of her, assuming she'd be slow, but she clearly wasn't. Turns out she was a up n coming pro triathlete - when we hit the first real climb, she destroyed almost everyone out there and would have led the entire ride if she knew where to take the group. Much respect.

Unfortunately, this has also happened to me on the PCH, which is why I never draft anybody unless we've started out the ride together.

I'm not even that strong, but while riding at a steady 25mph on a flat solo, minding my own business, I've had a pro triathlete woman (I'm assuming she's pro) ride up from behind me and suddenly yell "Get the F out of my way! It's guys like you that get in the way that make pros look bad!" I had no warning or clue she was behind me until she suddenly shouted that.

The most ridiculous part is that after she made the pass and then once the next rolling hill started, it became obvious to me that she definitely wasn't as strong as I was - not even close. She was probably sprinting the flat like crazy, whereas I was going hard but steady. I chose to repay the favor by blowing by her on the RIGHT on the climb and gapping her far enough that she couldn't draft.

If this wasn't during a draft-illegal tri race (and even then the onus is on her to avoid the draft box), WTF was she talking about, "get out of the way"?!? I woulda been tempted to spray her brake levers with gatorade as I rode by...
