Too much testosterone or too fragile an ego?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No doubt some folks get their adrenaline more pumped up when they are passed, for whatever reason. But in the first example cited by the OP, I think it is also possible that the other rider passed them on the straights, and then got caught on the hills (twice) simply due to being a faster rider on the flats who struggles with hills. (Such as a heavier rider who makes a lot of power, but also has a weight "handicap" on hills.)

I'm not doubting, BTW, that "being passed by a girl" makes a lot of guys try harder. My daughter is a pretty good distance runner, as well as shorter-distance tri-athlete (e.g. running anywhere from 5k's to marathons, and Olympics-distance tri's). She definitely experiences the "guy trying to pass me at the end" scenario. On the other hand, she takes her own share of joy when she has faster times than guys she knows....

My first (only) marathon some 71 yr old man passed me with about 1/4 mile to go. In my mind I said there is no way in hell this 71 yr old man is going to beat me to the line. So I almost killed myself and beat him by 3 seconds. EGO or TESTOSTERONE?? I can't say.

In a tri I was passed by a girl, what made me mad was she snickered at me since I was obviously not up to speed. I did stay with her a while but then she finally left me behind as I figured she was going too hard. And that was OK because in the run portion, I passed her like she was dragging lead. Gotta save some for the run, hun, as I passed her and she knew it.

I think it goes both ways, there are women who like to annoy men, believe it or not. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

I knew roadies were fragile, but all the whining about being passed has reignited the "Racer" in me.

This morning was like manna from heaven.

I roll out of the house on my XC racing MTB with a baseball cap, hoodie, and cut-off camo shorts. I start to warm up a little on the flats......

Right in front of me were a man, and a woman with roadracing bikes in MATCHING full race kit hauling ass. I could not believe my eyes. I start to crank it up and start dumping gears in the back.

Up ahead are 2 fairly steep hills. The woman falls right behind the man as the churn up the first grade...............I am just breathing through my nose at 90%+ effort, looking cool as ice and drop the woman first, she yells to her campanion "biker behind!" he looks back quickly just as I smoke him too.

I normally take a left after the second hill, and I figure there are 10-1 odds that they go straight (I am hoping!) so I hold my ever widening lead, but on the verge of blowing a gasket, and bang the left..................they go straight. Thank goodness.

I am a CHAMPION.

There you have it, a glimpse into the mind of a "Racer". It's all in fun.

As I ride I use people off in the distance as rabbits, just for motivation, I dont go around looking for women to pass. There is one, a woman, here locally known as Terry, I call her Terry the Tormentor. She has earned, Arch Nemesis, status in my book. She has a phenomenal engine. I have on occasion ridden myself into the red zone and then some trying to match her pace. I remember one time about 3 years ago trying to chase her down, after about a 3 mile chase when I finally caught her she wasn't even sweating. Heck I'd follow her anywhere. phenomenal. Pass her? heck if I can stay with her and still have enough oxygen to make an ass of myself I am doing good.
