Apologies in Bend Oregon

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Apologies in Bend Oregon

So I made a comment to a rider today that turned out to be a different rider than who I thought it was.
Here's what happened: I was riding on Shevlin Park road just before noon today when a couple passed me. I think they were from out of town because I haven't ever seen them before and I ride this road all the time. They stopped just up the road so I went by them. I was riding along almost at the top of a hill when they passed me kind of slowly and then slowed down. I just passed them again and then a man passed me. I hastily assumed it was the same man and said "don't pass me unless you're going to ride faster than me". Looking back it was kind of insensitive anyway but especially since it wasn't the same guy I want to say I'm sorry. I hope this gets to the person I said it to.

I hope you dialed it up to 400 watts when he passed you.

I'm sure he got the message. And probably will stay out of your way. So will his friends

Okay... But I don't know why you would say it even if it had been the same guy.

Time to take out a full page ad in the local newspaper or use some billboards in town to declare your apology.

So it's not ok to do hill repeats on a climb, or stop to look at the scenery, take pictures, or just misjudge your effort and need to recover?

There are numerous reasons someone might pass you and then slow down.

You will pass me on the uphill, but not likely on the downhill because I'm fat AND crazy. Don't expect me to give away all that potential energy I just built up because your ego can't deal.

I have questions. Why would you even say that, unless you were just kidding and gave him a big roadie smile to go with it? Is there some Bend cycling etiquette that he violated or something, had it been the guy you thought it was? I think if someone said that to me I would laugh at their pomposity-and no offense intended at all, just surprised you said that.

I know, I admitted I shouldn't have said itbut there were cars passing right when it all bunched up. I guess I just got frustrated.

Actually I get passed all the time on the uphill and not on the downhill so that's why this happened. I'm not a racer I ride for fun and fitne
ss. I'm not one of those. I just don't want to get run over by a car because someone starts a pass and can't finish it.
