Cyclist stabbed in Road Rage incident

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It could be that a 2-second delay or having to hit his brakes was all the provocation he needed to go ballistic. But I always wonder, when I am involved in or witness something like this, what the attackee might have done differently to avoid the conflict.
We got there a few minutes later due to a flat, so I didn't see it, but I'm familiar with the setting.

Where this happned is on an access road to a Community College parking lot. I'm not sure what the speed limit is there, but it can't be over 25mph. The campus was closed for Memorial Day, and there was really no reason for any traffic to be on that road, other than to get in the Parking lot. (I think you can get into a neighborhood kind of through the backside down that road, but it is by no means a major connector.)

At the point the brushing occurs, you've crossed the last road of any significance, and you're rolling up into the parking lot. I would not doubt that the group was spread out across a lane, and probably a bit scattered, just cooling off after a hard 60 miles, but essentially rolling through a parking lot it would be hard to describe this as obstructing traffic.

Only the type of motorist that is PO'd by cyclist's mere presence could hav taken offense to a group riding down that particular road.

I taught my kids to always walk away from a fight. But if the fight comes to you, show no mercy.

How many brain cells do you have to be missing to walk into a group of 100+ and pick a fight?

Aggravated Battery (aggravated assault here in Canada) is a serious charge. Also easier to convict on vs. attempted murder charges.

My best wishes to the victims, and a speedy and thoroughly conviction.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's office posted the following on fb.

On May 31, 2010 at 10:52am, police were dispatched to 3939 Roosevelt Blvd. (FSCJ Kent Campus) in reference to a stabbing. Upon arrival, they observed two victims laying on the ground in the parking lot with stab wounds. The victims were bicycle riders participating in a Memorial Day bicycle ride.

Witnesses stated they were riding their bicycles into the parking lot of 3939 Roosevelt Blvd (FSCJ Kent Campus) when the suspect, Matt Salmons (25 years old, 1850 Gabin Road) was driving a vehicle behind them through the parking lot driveway approaching fast. The suspects passenger side mirror brushed against a riders arm. The bicyclist continued riding his bicycle and pulled into the parking lot were his vehicle was parked. Witnesses yelled at the vehicle to slow down.

The suspect pulled his vehicle in front of the riders, exited his vehicle and started a verbal argument with individuals. He was yelling and irate. An individual walked over to break up the argument. The suspect then started yelling and pushing an individual and stated, "I am not leaving until someone starts something." The suspect started chest bumping and pushing a rider. The rider said after he was pushed another bicyclist punched the suspect in the face. The individual stated he walked over to the suspects truck to help him. At that time he felt a sharp pain and observed that he had been stabbed. The victim sustained six stab wounds (one to the stomach and five stab wounds on his back).

Another victim sustained two lacerations, one to each arm when trying to help. The suspect then got into a vehicle and fled the scene.

Police were dispatched to 1536 Blanding Blvd in reference to a battery, the suspect called police to report he stabbed individuals after he was punched.

Officers located the suspect standing on the passenger side of the his truck. He was taken into custody without incident. The suspect had a large gash to his nose and other minor abrasions on his person. I spoke with the suspect and asked if he had any weapons on him or in his truck. He stated there was a knife in the center console or either of the doors. I asked for consent to search and the suspect verbally agreed. No weapons were found in the truck. The suspect was then transported to a local hospital and police were not able to locate the knife.

The suspect stated that he was driving his vehicle into the FCCJ parking lot and attempting to drive through a large crowd of bicyclist. Mr. Salmons said that he thought he hit one of the bicyclist with his mirror. The suspect said he followed them into the parking lot to check on them. The suspect then got into an argument with several people and told the group, "F*** all of you, come on." When he was punched in the face, he said, "I got my pocket knife and went to town." He got into his truck and fled the scene.

The suspect is charged with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of simple battery and does not have a bond at this time.

we need to know the dimensions of this knife
the guy deserved a punch in the head and he got it
anyone jumping out of a vehicle potentially has a weapon otherwise they would probably stay in the vehicle

Just be safe my fellow brother and sister cyclists. I hope none of us have to endure any trama while riding. I pray for a fast recovery. No one deserves to miss-out on a summer of riding because an idiot was inconvenienced.

Actually just ran into my first issue of road rage/ kid being a dingus last night. My wife and I went for a ride after I got home from work and on our way home a car drove past us and a kid late teens probably was leaning out the window and swearing up a storm at us. We went to single file hugging the white line, so no fault of ours. Luckily it didn't lead to something like this incident.

I would agree with that statement; was doing some island biking on vacation in southern florida this week and it was the BMw's, Benz's and have to trow in Audi's that were driving to close.

Ohio, had a mini-van squeeze me on Monday, right off the road. They come in all shapes and sizes and status machines.

a car passed me today, with maybe 2 feet of clearance. this skinny punk kid sitting in the passenger seat threw his cigarette butt at me and cussed me out. he got stopped at the light. I rolled up next to him, I'm apparently more intimidating when not being passed, because he didn't say a word.
