Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is my stem size?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am trying to figure out the stock stem size on my 50cm CAAD9. From the pic it almost look like it is a 95mm stem, but that seems odd. Maybe it is a 90mm? Again, sorry if I am missing something obvious here. Thanks for any help!

Edit: The stem is flipped down in case that makes a difference.

I've always wondered this. What is the correct way to measure a stem - middle of each hole? End to end? Something else?

If you want to know for sure, just email Cannondale support.

ps Have you checked the bottom of the stem? Maybe its written on there.

take off the stem, there should be some sort of marking near where the face plate attaches.

alternatively, measure the shorter of the edges, from center to center

+1. It will be marked somewhere. Sometimes it's on the inside of the faceplate as mentioned.

I've always measured c-to-c on the side, not the top.

Good, that works also. You'll probably get the same result with either method unless you're measuring a very steep stem.

90 mm or 9 cm

measure center of the top cap bolt to the center of the clamp (that space to the right - in photo - of Nm). typical road stems are in 10 mm increments.

Looks like a 90. And, all the recent Cannnondale stems I've looked at have their length & angle printed inside the bar clamp area.

Do they even make a 95mm stem? By the looks of it, like everyone else has said, 90mm.

Some stems are measured by reach rather than by extension. I can't tell the angle, but yours would probably be 90mm by reach.

For example, both of these stems mesure the same reach, although they are very different by extension.
