Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1.

I believe that well adjusted Apex or Tiagra will shift better than poory adjusted Red or Dura-Ace.

I'd have to disagree here. I also felt 6700 front shifting feel was largely due to the larger, longer lever and overall shape (speaking of shifting to the big ring). It was just an easier move to perform. Not that sram is really a problem.

In the end, it wasn't enough to keep the group on my bike, but it was nice.

OK, when all is said and done, 2010 Force is very good and I'll keep it.....................I'll also keep my Ultegra/Dura-Ace.
Good arguments were made although nothing overly convincing one way or another. Subjectiveness was apparent.

It really comes down to preference. I like the Force I have, reliable fast shifts, love the double tap. I do however have an issue and it is going to be fixed by Sram after the season. The spider and or spindle is not tru making it almost impossable to keep it tuned as there is almost always chain rub and chain drops off top and bottom at least once a ride if not more. Srtam rep has looked at it and we have tried different front chain rings, put on brand new ones and it still happens. This is how we ruled out bent chain rings as that's what both he and shop owner thought problem was. I will admit I think next bike I'll go back to Shimano, as much as I love the double tap I like quiet even better. Yes Shimano is heavier but when you're 6'1" 200lbs grams mean nothing.

+1. All the groups are good. That is to say the ones we all collectively agree are in the arena, i.e. NOT anything below Shimano 105 and/or sub $1k bikes.

Or you can use a shimano crankset with sram everything else as long as you don't mind the crank not matching.
I've got an ultegra crank/bb and rival everything else and the front shifting is perfect.

Does anyone have an issue with the SRAM brake pads? I have 2010 SRAM Force and Williams System 30 wheels and the braking from the beginning has been average at best - - wheel slides through the brakes easily even under steady pressure. In wet conditions, it is almost futile to apply brakes. The Williams wheels came with their own brake pads. Is this a special compound to match with their braking surface better?

My plan is simliar. Ultegra SL crankset, BB, with RED brifters, Force derailluers.

I'm with umd on this one. Going from Tiagra levers to 6700 while retaining the 6600 FD gave me no change other than improved feel in the lever. The shift itself was the same. The 6700 FD has a far better feel on the other hand.

My planned move was from 6700 to Force but a stupid good deal on some Red shifters and crank led me to build a Red group with Force FD. I rode a Tarmac with both setups and felt no difference - actually the Force seemed a little smoother even. I loved the 6700 group and it looked sharp but Red is just that much more intuitive for me.
