Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Things I learned on my ride tonight...

1. While my new Cateye light is bright, it doesn't let you see every sharp metal object in the road.
2. Said sharp metal object can cause rapid decompression of a bike tire.
3. It's always good to carry a spare tube.
4. When no tube is available, I can walk at a steady pace of 3 mph while pushing my bike.
5. I can ride a bike with a flat rear tire at a steady 10 miles an hour.
6. It's better to be 5 miles from home with a flat than 20.

Oh ya, I forgot # 7. Pumps don't run out of air like co2 does.

Not to hijack the thread, but how is CO2 a better choice than a small pump? Faster to use yes. Lighter yes. But don't people get a little nervous when they use up their cartridge with 20 miles to go in the ride? I know.... bring two cartridges. Now weight is no longer an advantage, and that third flat is just a shard away.

Depends on the wheel and how soon you have to be somewhere. Just watch the corners, they can be.. tricky.

It was a flat ride back to the house (no pun intended) and I stayed out of the saddle most of it.

Might want to make sure you didn't screw up your rim if you rode it any period of time without a tire.

Do you guys reuse tubes that you've patched? How do you like the "sticker" type patches (like Specialized has that don't require glue)?

Yes, why would you patch them if you're not going to use them?

I don't, I use the glue-on patches.

And carry a wallet to pay for the cab ride home

I had a flat on me on my 25-mi ride just when I was about to take off on my way back. So 12.5mi walk didn't sound appealing in road shoes. I called up my friend who was riding with me, and took off home as she lives in my 1/2 point, and I'm glad she picked me up and dropped me off in my starting point.

Lesson learned: I picked up a spare tube few days ago, and a patching kit with a bike-mounted pump.

Think about that question for a while

I don't believe the sticker type patches are as durable as the old fashioned glue and patch. I've tried them and they deloped a leak after a while.

I've used the sticker patches before but I don't feel as comfortable on them as I do the full (vulcanizing) patches. Heck, I patched a hole in my mountain bike's tire sidewall with the vulcanization patches. Not normally recommonded but with a brand new tire, I wasn't about to give up on it so soon.

+1.

And at least a $20. That's cab fare to, at least, somewhere within walking distance.

at that point i'll sell my bike because the next step is probably getting flattened by a bus.

i carry co2 for the speed. if I get a flat, I don't want anyone to hold any one up. co2 saves a lot of time.
