Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ebay race bike thoughts

Reading through some people's experience with ebay imported gear, I thought I'd have a go at a decent bike build using just ebay components, with the proviso that they had to be new, buy it now and able to ship to Australia.

Here's the bike I came up with:

Item, Aus$, US$, ebay address, weight
Frame $509.89 460 https://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Full-C...item563f1be687 1120
Fork $0.00 0 https://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Full-C...item563f1be687 0
Headset $42.07 37.95 https://cgi.ebay.com/RED-Token-TK011A...item3f01f5ce36 87
Stem $44.23 39.9 https://cgi.ebay.com/FSA-OS-150-Alloy...item3f007ee804 150
Handlebars $75.38 68 https://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Full-C...item563f1be5e6 270
Seat post $0.00 0 https://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Full-C...item563f1be687 0
Seat $128.55 115.97 https://cgi.ebay.com/Selle-Italia-Fli...item439d1c362e 270
Wheelset $810.91 731.56 https://cgi.ebay.com/New-CARBON-ROAD-...item27b472b3d5 1950
Tyres $150.11 135.42 https://cgi.ebay.com/Continental-Gran...item2c50811f8e 414
Tubes $22.17 20 80
Cassette $110.84 99.99 https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-Ultegra-...item1c12448dc1 208
Cranks $243.37 219.56 https://cgi.ebay.com/Sram-Rival-OCT-B...item8e074e79c5 830
Bottom Bracket $0.00 0 https://cgi.ebay.com/Sram-Rival-OCT-B...item8e074e79c5 0
Front der $396.33 357.55 https://cgi.ebay.com/MicroShift-Arsis...item1c14b7c36d 98
Rear der $0.00 0 https://cgi.ebay.com/MicroShift-Arsis...item1c14b7c36d 196
Chain $0.00 0 https://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-Ultegra-...item1c12448dc1 267
Shifters $0.00 0 https://cgi.ebay.com/MicroShift-Arsis...item1c14b7c36d 380
Brakes $71.72 64.7 https://cgi.ebay.com/Cane-Creek-SCR-3...item43a150e762 296
Shifting cables $43.23 39 https://cgi.ebay.com/New-Jagwire-Race...item45f4bd0267 100
Brake cables $0.00 0 https://cgi.ebay.com/New-Jagwire-Race...item45f4bd0267 100
Bar tape $23.19 20.92 https://cgi.ebay.com/SRAM-SuperCork-B...item335fcc1f8c 50
Bottle cages $24.50 22.1 https://cgi.ebay.com/Full-Carbon-Moun...item4cf155202e 50
Pedals $171.36 154.59 https://cgi.ebay.com/2010-Look-KEO-2-...item5ad6e8ac52 244

Total Aus$ price 2,867.83
Total US$ price 2587.21
Total weight, grams 7160
Total weight, pounds 15.752

Compare this to the Fuji SL Comp (https://www.goldcross.com.au/online-s...94#Description)

(without pedals, cages) it is 8.29kg / 18.28lbs and AU$3199 or AU$2560 with 20% off (current promotion) - ~2750 with pedals, cages.

With pedals, that is 8.53kg vs 7.16kg - so 1.4kg lighter for $117 more with race carbon wheels etc, your own wrenching and no good warranty/support.

Pretty cool, but if I had $3K to spend, I would probably wait for one of the 2010 bikes to come on special in 2011 - you could probably get this one for that price at that stage:

https://www.goldcross.com.au/online-s...27#Description

only slightly heavier (7.61kg / 16.77lbs) with better local support.

I was thinking of going the ebay route for my next bike, and decided to fully cost what I would be looking at in $$$ terms.

Would be a pretty good bike I think all up.

Yeah - just looked and you could save another $14 by going full Rival:

https://cgi.ebay.com/SRAM-RIVAL-8pc-G...2#ht_816wt_912

- with it you save another 30 grams and have a better aesthetically and functionally integrated bike - good call!

Hmm, not 'quite a bit' of savings. Still in my mind a better idea. Still a long ways from a 'great' idea, but if you like this, and not that... on your bike, like I do (personal preference stuff), a $3k pieced-together bike is better than a $3k off-the-shelf bike.

That wheelset isn't a good deal, though. I or many others could build you that wheelset in ~1400 grams for that money. Although of course I won't ship to Australia unless you want to pay the $250 or so it costs.

Yeah - the trouble with living in the Antipodes!

Was looking for a full wheelset, but saw could get some considerably cheaper rims etc.
