Need help on a new Pedal....
Hey BFer's!
ok so i sold my set of speedplay X5 pedals because i want to buy a set of SPD pedals with a platform because i've ridden with those before and i really enjoyed the comfort of those and the ease of unclipping with them also. I have a 3 bolt setup on my shoes and I wanted some advice on what pedals to buy. I really want the Shimano 105's and i saw them on Ebay for $70 NIB but was wondering if there's any other suggestions you guys have let me know! I have $80 to spend so anything in that price range is good....I also saw some Look pedals online for a decent price but was wondering which route i should go. I have a Scattante CFR with FSA crankarms and 34t/50t cranks, size 55, Scattante Carbon road shoes and I'm 5'10", 215lbs and i like to sprint and am really getting into climbing jsut recently so i need something that will fill all those requirements. Thanks guys

You're not going to want LOOK then. I used Shimano SPDs for a long time and always liked them. Mine didn't have a platform, but the clip was easy to use and maintain. I'd go for those. You can also use a platform attachment on the Speedplays. I saw it posted around here somewhere.

Ah ok...So if i go with SPD's, I was looking at the 105's so they can match the rest of my group set...Would you recommend those or something else?

huh?
Many road shoes now, especially with carbon soles, only have the 3-hole Look pattern and don't have the 2-hole SPD mount. You better check your shoes first. If you want a SPD pedal with a platform you will need the 2-hole mount. A SPD pedal with platform is something like this:
or this:
The Shimano 105 and Look pedals are not SPD and platform like you requested.

With clipless - go with shimano 540's - excellent pedals for around $50. They're very similar to my previous Keo Look Classics.
But if you want the ones with a flat platform, then go with mtb pedals, the ones you can flip on the other side and ride in normal shoes.

The Shimano pd-A530 might be worth looking into.

thanks for all the suggestions! I've spent the last hour or so looking at all the different options i had and I didn't know the SPD's were only for 2 bolt shoes. My mistake. I'm really looking into a pair of mavic pedals i saw for sale at performance bike. They're 3 bolt setup so they would work great. I'll keep checking back and let you know what i end up getting. Thanks!

105's are SPD-SL, they are a road pedal that use 3 hole cleats. SPD are the "mountain" pedals that use the smaller two hole cleat, are often double sided and come in other flavours like the A-520.

Mayday, I have a set of A520s that are in great shape. If you want to pay shipping, I'll send them to you. Karma and such. (Note they're not platform).
They're the ones in this pic.
