I forgot how much I hate trainers!
I just finished riding my trainer for the first time in around 2 1/2 years. I forgot how much I dislike them and why I would rather ride in the cold/rain/sleet/snow. I know that I will be spending a lot of time on the trainer this year but I'm really not looking forward to it.
Now, with that said I am looking forward to the fitness gains I will get from the time I will be putting in on the trainer this winter.

I'll remember why I hate rollers pretty soon.

I'll refresh myself on why I hate rollers in the near future as well. However, it will be nice to train myself to have a smooth spin again.

If you dislike them so much, why ride in them?

Every drop of sweat that hits the floor reminds me of a car that will not kill me. It's easier with the lights off and music playing.
I've not tried the giant monitor in front of me with the dvd of perspective riding yet.

I need to set my dvr to record some episodes of Family Guy, that seems to help make the time go by faster. I kind of miss the computrainer that I sold, that helped a little as well.

Because the gains I will see after a few months of using the trainer three or four days a week will make it all worth while. I will also be riding outside two or three times a week but on work days I will be limited to trainer hell.

That would actually be kind of fun. I bet by the time winter is over you will have a better sprint than you have ever had.

I am with you on that score. Just a soon take a beating as get on one again. I am lucky though as I live in the Sornan desert and the winters are quite mild. We pay our dues here in the summer. Most days I leave the house at 3;30 or 4 AM in order to get some miles in. Lots of times it 90+ when I leave and many times 111 when I get home. It's then I envy some of the cooler climates. Good luck

I pedal in my sleep...
One trainer bonus for me, I go through a LOT of books in the winter months.

I'm thinking about buying a trainer, and this worries me. I have a set of rollers that I barely use because it's so boring, and hear the trainer is worse. Rollers are mostly a problem because it's hard to concentrate on doing something so boring for so long, so I can only do 45-60 minutes. Thinking with a trainer I could just zonk out and pedal while watching movies.

One of the guys I ride with can ride the trainer for 2+ hours.
I think my record is 35 minutes on the trainer. I can do about 1 hour on the rollers.

I just was on mine for the first time in many years as well. BORING. I'm not going to ride in the cold and dark, so I am going to have to find a way to cope.

I've done about 2 1/2 or 3 hours before, it really makes you appreciate being out on the road. I can only do about 40 minutes or so on rollers before I start getting numbness in the nether regions. One guy I used to ride with would do five hour centuries on the trainer.

my record is an hour and a half: https://connect.garmin.com/activity/47076112
not sure why but the seat hurts like nuts compared to real riding. I ended up folding a baby blanket into quarters and putting that on top of the seat, made it bearable... quite tempted to buy one of those squishy seats for indoor riding...

The only thing worse than the trainer sessions are those inane "spinning" classes at the Y.
Come to think of it, seems like we are overdue for some spinning threads that seem to propagate in the cold weather.

A trainer without a selection of Spinervals and CTS DVD's for me is torture and usually ineffective. With the DVD's, it is enjoyable and a great offseason training experience. For example, you couldn't do the 2 month CTS Progressive Power training series without making significant improvement in your FTP.

I can last about 30 mins on the trainer before I want to commit suicide. With that said, intervals on a trainer are pretty wicked successful. More so than the dodging the red light intervals I do out on the road.

Add me to the list...my Flite is normally super comfy (like cloud nine) out on the road, but when I plunk my bike in the trainer, it feels like I'm sitting on a dozen bricks.

I can put in about an hour or so, before it becomes torture. Usually, I only last 45 minutes or less.
I prefer to mix in spin classes, and other aerobic classes at the gym during the off-season. I know that it does not work exactly the same muscles, but it breaks the monotony of doing nothing but cycling, and seems to prevent injuries. Especially IT band issues for me.
While I can't ride a trainer more than an hour, I actually think it is fun to sit through 2-3 spin classes in a row at least twice a week. You never have the same instructor or music for two classes on the same day, and the classes are just fun and rowdy at my gym. Much better than grinding home all alone (wife's and girlfriends tend to avoid the trainer room...too many nasty tempers in there).

Think quality rather than quantity when it comes to trainer time - shorter more structured (and varied) workouts verses longer monotonous drudgery. "Junk miles" don't improve performance on the road and neither do "junk minutes" on the trainer.
As for me . . . I actually look forward to my after-work trainer sessions. After all, I'm still in the saddle even if I'm not going anywhere!
