Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mountain Bike Road Cycling.

I live in Santa Monica. I rode my bike to the Ventura County Line using PCH, solo. An amazing workout, & like most things; smooth one way, killer coming back. It took about 4+/-hrs each way. Amazing views on the trip.
I'll go again: Friday morning, that way it'll be getting lighter, not darker.

That's a good stretch of road. Usually the wind blows from the west, so I'm guessing you had a harder ride out than back. Next you can try riding up some of the canyon roads.

I know a guy who put slicks on his giant hardtail and can do 27 mph on flats for extended periods of time. Not to mention, with that gearing, he flies up hills. The bike weighs like 50 pounds since he loads it with a trunk bag and rack but I guess if you have that kind of capabilities.. go for it.

Doesn't sound like you ride like my friend does, but it just goes to show that it's more than possible and plausible. Sounds like you had a great ride.

Until I got a CX bike this year, all of my biking was on my 36 lb Giant hardtail.
I've put slicks on and done a handful of metric centuries.
Never got the stones to try a full century on it, but probably will give it a go in the spring with my CX.

Run what you brung!
