Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I ride with my headphones on...

I am seriously reconsidering it after thinking about me lying in an ER room with a fellow roadie whispering in my ear car back..

It's just the lamest argument. Like a speeding car three feet into the bike lane for two miles would be able to miss you from somebody yelling CAR BACK. There's always a car back. At least where I ride. You literally would have to say CAR BACK every 10 seconds. I ride assuming there is a car back constantly, which essentially means nothing. To me it would be like preparing for a head-on collision in your car. What'cha gonna do?

I prefer calling 'CAR AHEAD!' from the back of the group.

does that mean you understand that there are other places with different traffic volume?

I have been on plenty of rides where a car comes along once every five minutes or so. Hearing it helps. "Car back" also helps

True, in fact this is when one typically yells...when the car back is not quite expected, or you happen to spot it some time ahead when someone at the front is peeling off after taking a pull and is too spent to pay attention.

If you can't walk and chew gum at the same time, tis prolly for the best.

sometimes on group rides we take up the whole road and "car back" is a good way to let the leaders know that we should single up and let the car pass.

I ride where I ride regardless of where the car is, and that is to say, about 2 feet from the white line. I'm not going to smush myself onto the white line or non-existent shoulder just so some a-hole with not enough time on his hands can buzz me because he thought it was implicitly OK based on my location. If I were to get hit, it wouldn't be because I didn't hear him coming, it'd be because he didn't see me.

But I wouldn't wear earbuds in a group ride. 1) What's the point in coming out to a group ride just to be anti-social? 2) I need to be able to hear things like freehubs coasting and people calling out "glass" or "hole"

That's what it means here. If I'm not in a group I ride with one earphone in sometimes.

it is always interesting to me that the "every little bit counts" mantra for performance does not trickle down to safety.

Forget earphones! I use ear plugs and I close my eyes while riding. I know the route really well, so its not really a problem.

Riding with headphones is kind of like needing that warning on the side of cigerettes that tells you sucking smoke into your body is bad for you. DUH!!!

On my head at least, the right ear buds reduce wind noise. I can hear cars as well or better with buds and tunes playing at a reasonable volume than with no buds at all.

I always wear ear buds when riding solo, when riding in a group they stay in the vehicle.

No headphones for me, I prefer hearing everything around me. Besides I listen to music all of the time so a break from it is nice.

Next thing you'll be telling us is that you ride without a helmet.
