Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OK, the(redacted) crack was totally uncalled for. I apologize, particularly to my good Asian pals on this board (all of whom possess enough of a sense of humor and a thick enough skin to not care). But those Shimano guys are pissing me off.

Feel free to retaliate with any butt oriented Greek jokes. I've been hearing them my whole life.

You will never switch over to SRAM and you know it. I'd love to pick up the Ultegra version of Di2 if I can get the whole group for under 2k.

I'll always love the manual shifting of the 7800.

I still respect Shimano for the fact that they continue to product Dura-Ace branded downtube shifters--there's some solidarity and hope in the fact that they still believe in the simple functionality of bikes, or at least some of their customers do.

Even Dura Ace isn't perfect. My 7800 has Srammed a few times in the last year of riding.
Fortunately I was wearing all-black shorts all three times.

Rode a Di2 equipped Super Six on Saturday. Was it nifty? Yeah, OK. Is this the future of high end bike components? Well, yeah, maybe if the manufacturers figure it's cheaper to make the stuff this way.

Does it deliver any appreciable big advantage over mechanical shifting?

No, with the possible exception of ability easily locate shift buttons in different places.

Is this worth a $2K premium to a high end mechanical bike group?

Of course not. And that's why nobody is buying it. It's the question nobody asked. And after riding it I am not convinced anybody really cares. I don't.

You must be joking. If Shimano has a friggin brain in its (redacted) (they don't) they'll drop the price on this crap hard to counter SRAM who came out of nowhere 4-5 years ago and is gobbling market share from them like Pac Man. They really are idiots. I'm ready to go Sram. Shimano has lost its way.
didn't I tell you when it first came out that I thought it wasn't going to be all that interesting? I tried it out on the Giant they had set up with Di2 at Westwood and I felt it was nice but not worth the money to me.

I'd like to try Di2. I am opposed to actually having a bike of my own with it. I can't see any need for electronic assistance for shifting. I am in no way opposed to any one else using and enjoying it.

Campagnolo makes some nice stuff. You should give it a try.

SRAM's tech documents are pretty worthless in comparison to Shimano (and both are compared to Park Tool). A FAQ would be nice.

PCAD, what if the electric shifting was automatic, or something. Like you list a cadence that you would like to maintain and it does the shifting for you.

You would be all over that.

how much of the yawn is cost and weight - if those were equal or close to it for electronic vs mechanical, would the answer differ? what about the ability to program combo FD/RD shifts or shift jumps ala F1's 7th to 2nd buttons?

Why put more expensive components on the bike and add weight?

Thumb buttons suck.
