Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

R3 is complete. A few pics just for fun!

It's finally done. Sram Red 11-25 cassette and Speedplay Zero pedals just came in to complete the build. I was going to go with white pedals, but decided on black in the end. Also had the LBS swap the PC-1051 chain for a PC-1071. It supposedly shipped with a PC-1051 from Cervelo. I noticed it when I first went to pick up the bike, so they offered to swap it out for PC-1071 that is spec'd on Cervelo's website.

Now I just have to wait for the weekend to ride this thing! Hopefully the weather cooperates.

Hey, thanks for posting this!!! That's my dream bike! I don't think my LBS will be so kind to do the white/blue for Rival swap, however.

Really appreciate the photos and enjoy that puppy! Please post back with your initial riding thoughts.

I really don't like Cervelo's but that's really nice. Also, that looks incredibly light.

There's actually a pair of those exact Dave-O cages in blue up for sale on eBay. Starting bid is at $38 for the pair. Less than a day left until the auction ends, so I'll have to keep an eye on them. If I don't have a chance with those, I'll probably go with the Arundel Mandible cages with the "oil slick" carbon finish.

Thanks! I haven't had a chance to weigh it yet. I don't even have a bathroom scale at the new apartment to estimate it. I'm not going to start to guess the weight right now because I don't want to be disappointed when I do get around to weighing it. It is pretty darn light though, going purely by feel when picking it up.

I plan on getting Red shifters in the near future, mainly for the zero loss rear shifting. It will also shave a few more grams off the bike, but that's not a huge concern of mine at the moment. (If anyone wants to make me a fair offer for the Rival shifters before I use them, just shoot me a PM)

Trust me..I'd jam all day every day if I could. Now that I'm working full-time, it's going to be much more difficult to find time to ride. I totally took college and my free time for granted. I'm hoping that when the summer comes and the days get longer, I can ride from like 5-8pm after work. I'm also still looking for a group to ride with on the weekends. I may go to Conte's Bicycles (where I bought the bike) to ask if I can join their weekend group ride. This past Sunday when I went in there to get the cassette installed I noticed a ton of people all kitted out about to leave the shop for a ride. Some of the people I recognized as store employees. Hopefully, they won't mind if I come along.

Also, what do you guys think about swapping the black speedplay pedals for white ones? I got a call last night from the LBS telling me the white ones I originally ordered came in and I can swap them out if I want to. When I went in to get the cassette installed, I got impatient and took the black ones home because they had them in stock. It's not a big deal and the black ones look just fine, but since I do have the option I'd like some opinions.

Great looking bike. I would keep the black pedals as the color matches the black crank arms. Most of the time they will be covered by your shoes anyway!
I don't think the shop where you bought that bike would mind AT ALL if you joined their ride.

I just got done riding this bad boy! OMG is all I can say! Heavenly, divine, orgasmic...only words I can think of right now!

The road feel is simply incredible. The bike has ZERO flex, it's snappy as hell, and it does a great job of killing all the road vibration, while still letting me "feel" the road. Just to give you an idea of what I mean, my friend's Specialized Roubaix does a good job of stopping all the road vibrations, but it feels like I'm riding on flat tires. It has a "dead" feel to it, if that makes any sense. Not my R3. It's lively and smooth as freakin' butter! I'm in awe right now. My expectations were not only met, but exceeded times a thousand! Coming from an aluminum bike, I knew what carbon fiber would do for ride quality, but this bike is on another level.

Before I went out, I spent at least an hour perfectly aligning the brake pads with the brake track and giving them about 1mm toe-in. Reynolds must have done a great job with the blue brake pads, because these things stop just as well, if not better than the aluminum wheels on my last bike in terms of both braking power and modulation. No noise at all, btw. Of course, this was in dry weather. Don't know how they will work in wet conditions.

I'm the happiest guy in the world right now! I can't wait for this weekend so I can put some serious miles on this thing!

By the way, this was my first experience with Speedplay pedals. I like!

I didn't know they came from the factory with "heel-in" float until I started riding. I didn't mind the "ice skating" feel one bit, but the whole heel-in float was throwing me off a bit. I'm pretty sure I just dialed out all inward float, but it's dark now so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see how it actually feels. I say pretty sure because I adjusted the front (heel-in) float screw until the float indicator was to about half-way. I'm assuming that's all I had to do. I am liking this pedal system overall though!

Another side note: These S-works shoes are another fantastic product. I have wide feet and thought I'd never find a good shoe until I tried on the S-works shoe. Fits my foot like a glove and with no pressure points. There's enough room in the toe box and through the mid-foot as well. I highly recommend them if you have a wider foot. The BOA enclosure system is the icing on the cake. They are so easy to operate and making minute adjustments doesn't get any easier. Two thumbs up!

I stopped by Contes last night to pick up my R3SL. Dropped it off Saturday to fix a recurrent cable-breakage issue. Bike wasn't ready yet.

They must have been having too much fun working on your bike

I keed. I keed.
