Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pricing out a Trek 2300..

Hey guys...

I'm looking at a trek 2300 bike guys, its an aluminum frame with carbon fork, 3-spd front cassette, not sure about the about the rear cassette...

I talked to the guy over the phone, he thinks its an 01-02 at newest, he bought it 9 yrs ago he said, new. Its a 56cm frame which is just fine for my size, about 5'11"

Any more info on this bike anyone can give me? I think it'll have STI shifters, or possibly brifters, not sure, but it has the full ultegra gear set/line up... so whatever that may have included at the turn of the decade.

He is asking $800 for the bike.. I think its more likely only worth 400-500 but I'm not sure on the price either, that would be nice to know, if anyone has an idea. Can't find much on ebay, found prices from 500-1200 on road****************

Thanks guys,

Nick

Hmm. I think i'll go check out both of these bikes, the madone, and the 2300. its funny that their asking prices are within 100 of each other, on bikes originally 1000 price difference, and with a 4 year discrepency... someones a bit off obviously.

Yup $800 is wayyyy too much. Toss in $50 and you can get a 2010 CAAD9!

To put things in perspective for you, I sold my 2005 Trek 2100 for $800. It was in mint condition with very very low miles (<800mi). I wouldn't offer a dime over $500.

Hey, I just took a look at a 2005 trek Madone 5.2 and I'm pretty impressed. It weighs around 18lbs i think, super light. It was in pretty decent shape as well, had a few ticks on it though in the gel coat, I think I counted three on the upper frame support, that's about it. I rode it around a little and was pretty surprised at its acceleration as compared to anything else I've ridden. Its crazy what a few lbs difference will make. The tires are nice on it, they seem to be brand new continental tires, the front still has the raised rubber line from manufacture on it.

The few things i'm worreied about are longevity and durability. it fits me well, but it feels like it is fragile. I know carbon is actually quite strong, but its also super brittle. I'll probably have to keep it indoors in winter, and watch out on the roads I figure.

It fits pretty well though, and rides quite nice. I'll need to get pedals most likely, he has the clipless pedals and I don't have shoes that fit those, and likely a new saddle as well.

Any thoughts on this bike? He's asking $900 for it and I think its a decent deal. I'll be trying to do ~20 miles a day 3 or 4 days a week this summer so I'm hoping it will be pretty reliable.

Thanks.
nick

Do a search for Madone 5.2 on Ebay. You will see lots of bikes there with prices. Seems to me the $900.00 is fair but you may be able to get him to come down some.
