Looking at buying 2005 Trek 2300 56cm - Thoughts?
Hello,
I've been learning about road bikes as much as I can, and keeping my eye out for any good used deals.
I've found a 2005 Trek 2300, I've got the pricing at $700, I think it's a good deal in my opinion, but wouldn't mind hearing others (I'm also located in Toronto, Ontario, if location helps on the pricing).
Also, I'm 6', the bike is 56cm, according to the Trek road bike fitting guide, it should fit, it seems from what I've read, it's at least worth making the 45 minute drive to see if it fits properly, does any disagree?
I'm not sure what the mileage is on it (the guy bought it used himself), but it appears to LOOK decent in the pictures.
Here is a pic:

I got him back down to $700, but is this still worth it? In my inexperienced eyes it seems so. Thanks

$700 CA isn't a rare bargain, but in general that's a good bike. A month ago I bought a used Trek 2100 (a 2005 model originally purchased new in 2006) for $400. My 2100 is basically the exact same bike but with a 105 group. So the Ultegra group on this 2300 is a step up from there. Looks like new Easton wheels. Everything else looks good too.
It would be a good deal at $600 -- so if it fits and is in as good a shape as it appears then why not $700?
When you get there search high and low for a problem or some issue he didn't mention and use that to drop the price to $650.
The 2300 is the same frame as my 2100. It's a custom grade Aluminum that's light and strong. It was one of the Trek frames still made in the USA, which is good. The carbon fork and seat stays help with isolation.

One more thing... if you were to look for a new bike with the same group and similar construction frame you'd be paying $1,600 to $1,800 for it.

THANK YOU, that's what I was looking for, someone to give me an idea of if I was wasting my money or not
Thanks for the links, I've come across them the past couple hours scouring the net about this bike, seems most people are happy with it, I just wasn't sure of it's value.
I've got the guy down from 750 to 700, and that was pretty hard. He had it listed as a 2006 but really it's a 2004.. maybe I can get it down some more
Thanks again for the help!

I wouldn't negotiate on price any more until you see the bike.
One tactic is to take cash and when the guy is saying, "I've had lots of calls on this bike" and "A guy is coming to buy it tomorrow" just pull out six $100 bills and tell him you'll pay him $600 cash right now and take the bike. The seller will always be wondering if he turns you down will he ever get a better offer.
But don't buy it if there is something wrong with it OR if if it doesn't fit you. Keep that in mind always.
