Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

noob question

I am doing a charity ride, it is 75 miles a day for 2 days in a row. I do not ride hardly at all any more , and I need to start training.

I need to buy new tires for my old bike i am going to ride, right now i have 700 x 23 tires on the bike

what is a good size tire to ride for the longer distance and road conditons ?

also tire recomendations? cheaper the better, but i dont want to get a flat either.

also .... for training, how do you think I should train for this disitance? i know it isnt extreme or anthything , but i want to be prepared.

thanks !!

When is the event ? That will affect how you should train
Start riding, increase your mileage, get rest, back off the week before so your legs are fresh
700 x 23 are just fine. Plenty of good brands out there.
Bring spare tubes, pump, tire levers & know how to fix a flat

The event is in September. Luckily they have SAG vehicles that will help if we get flats and stuff, but yes i need extra tubes, and i have a tool kit.

I think that you are thinking that a 700x25 would give you a more comfortable ride. It will compared with a 700x23, other things being the same.

Plenty of time. Just get out and ride. Do a long ride each week. The definition of "long" will change as you get more fit. Variety. If the course is hilly, get used to riding some hills now & then. Bring plenty of water with you, and snacks for longer rides. Don't go crazy trying to improve 20 % each week ... take your time, take an easy week here & there... rest & recover, eat well ....

Bikes: 2 LeMond road bikes and a Cannondale MTB

You have plenty of time. One helpful tip is to ride really hard during the last 4-5 miles during your current training rides. This will help simulate the pain you may experience during the longer 75 milers. Your body will adapt to the pain and make you a stronger rider in less time.

I like my specialized all-condition armadillos. 700x28 even at 120 psi they are quite comfortable. I have them on 3 bikes.
