So I took my bike to Korea...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Awesome ride reports and pics. Perhaps everyone should do a ride report to show what it's like for them to ride in their country or section of country.

Now you have to take your bike to North Korea. That might be different.
Considering that we were about 10 miles from the DMZ after climbing the mini-mountain, I consider my experience a pretty good compromise...

We had to ride through traffic to get to the mountains; everyone told me the drivers were insane--seemed similar to Brooklyn.

I speak enough conversational Korean to get by so I consider that pretty good for being born and raised in the good ol' USA.

I'm not sure what is more crazy, Korean drivers or riding over the Brooklyn Bridge on a warm, summer weekend.

When the dust is in the air, everything gets covered with a fine mustard colored dust - looks like heavy haze in the air, but it's dust. Really nasty. If he's out climbing hills on a bike in those conditions, he's a better man than I am.

As for the colors - if you had even seen how Korean drivers drive, you'd also want to be as maximally visible. We know where our cars are with in a foot or so. Koreans know within an inch.

I remember riding in Korea- spent 7 1/2 years there. Riding used to be a little um, dicey, with the narrow roads and all. I was there during the '88 Olympics too and rode the road course afterwords. I got dropped once going from Seoul to Tongduchon by some guys that were all over 55 years old. All they did was ride all day. I enjoyed the scenery too! Glad to see the cycling scene and roads are doing so well now! Enjoy!

Seoul and the surrounding areas have changed incredibly since '88 but the small villages outside of the main cities haven't changed at all in the last 20 years.

From what I observed, most people in Korea who are more serious about riding ride on mtn. bikes and after riding there, I think that the trails there would actually be a lot more fun than road cycling.

Awesome. Moral to this story for me: bring your bike with you when you travel. You never know what might happen.

Very enjoyable read kimconyc. The pictures added so much more to the thread. Can't wait to see where you take your bike next.
