Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Noise while riding. Not a mechanical issue but a technique/setup issue (video)

I have been told I have a good pedaling stroke. However, this year I have started to notice a pinging noise while pedaling.

If I can't get it fixed I will need to go back and get refitted.

My thoughts are that that seat isn't high enough which is causing the stroke to hitch at the 3 oclock pos. I dont want to make major adjustments as I was fit last year. If need be I will go back and and get it redone.

Any help would be appreciated.

I can duplicate the sound I hear in this video. It is not a constant issue but pops up 30% of the time. https://s77.photobucket.com/albums/j47/etutwiler/?action=view&current=8bcb6489.mp4 click on the picture to play the video

This is not a fit issue.

How can it be a fit issue if you can replicate the sound while spinning the crank with your hand?

in order to get the sound to produce I am jerking the crank. Imagine an emphasis on the down stroke on the 3 oclock position.

The only thing i can think of is when i pull up on my pedal and push down my leg is not hitting the apex resulting in the chain kind of hesitating and then being pulled taughtly.

I can duplicate it but again it requires a slight hesitation at the top of the crank.

Almost sounds like a freewheel issue just when you apply power to the pedal.

Or possibly a bottom bracket problem.

Definitely not a fit issue.

Why are you hesitating at the top of your pedal stroke? Just pedal perfect circles and it won't make that noise.

Since the sound appears to be happening when you crank by hand on the drive side, try doing it on the non-drive side to see if you can still reproduce the noise. If you can't, I would start thinking pedal bearings. If you can, start thinking bottom bracket bearings.

It is definitely not a seat or any type of fit issue if you can reproduce the noise when not sitting on the bike and turning the crank by hand.

definately NOT a fit issue. its a mechanical issue. take it in to a good mechanic and show him what its doing. He should be able to at least identify the issue rather quickly I'd say.

It sounds like a freewheel issue to me as well, when you apply a lot of torque on the down stroke.

It almost sounds like the hollow "thud" from a rim. So I would look at your cassette, ensure the lock ring is tight, and I would also inspect your spokes for tightness.

It's probably the crank, since it is happening at the same angular position.

it happens on both sides.

Torque does seem to play a roll

I am not doing it purposely. If I am it is due to a fit issue

Have you tried putting this same wheel on a different bike (yours or a friends)? If you can do that, and the noise is still there, then it seems like you have isolated the problem to be in the wheel, and can zero in on that.

I agree. I'm no mechanic or pro. but this looks like a situation to me that your stride just isn't smooth. I understand that you are trying to emphasize the stroke with your hand, but the sound I hear is something I can easily duplicate at ANY downward position with my feet and hand by pausing and then pushing down which simply engages the hub. Again I'm not there and I'm only going from what i see in the video. Going from that, i would say you should in fact go back and get a fitting and ask them to watch your stride and see if there is a jerk or pause at the top of your down stroke.

***update***

Easton EC90 cranksets have a flaw in them. Apparently, the non drive side arm comes loose on the spindle. They are sending me a box to return the part and hopefully send me a check for the crankset.

if you hold the drive side arm still you can move the non side drive arm up and down. This cannot be fixed.

Did you torque your cassette to spec?

nothing was installed wrongly. It is 100% the crankset. Easton is no longer making cranksets. I would imagine this is one of the reasons why.

It sucks because I really liked this crankset. But that hitch really became troublesome on a 3 hour ride.

Now I am rolling a Sram Red black edition.
