The 2011 BF Ultimate Budget Bike Build
Hi all,
I had an idea that stemmed oddly from a 55/Rad post about handlebars. Someone was looking for the best budget aluminum bar and he suggested a Dimensional Flat/Compact road bar for $35. He also suggested in recent memory a Nashbar GR2 saddle for ~$28. That got me to thinking - always a dangerous thing of course. If we put our collective BF mind to work what kind of build could we come up with on a budget? I'm not talking about going uber cheap, I'm talking about bang for the buck.
Let's start with a frame. Suggestions?

https://www.novemberbicycles.com/frameset/ ?
Not super duper cheap, but from everything I've read about it, the bang-for-your-buck ratio is excellent.

What's the budget?
My contribution ($1500 if you get good prices...):
Frame: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...01&scname=Road
Wheels: Neuvation M28s?
Group: SRAM Rival , Shimano 105, Campy Veloce or Centaur.

And for group I think the new Tiagra 10sp is going to have some serious bang for the buck. From the looks of it I think Shimano just took 5600 and slapped a Tiagra sticker on it.

I know your don't want editorializing, but just so you know I like your "idea" but it's going to be MUCH MUCH cheaper if you buy a budget bike whole rather than piecemeal as you are suggesting.
If you are truly on a budget and know how to build up a bike, you are probably smart enough to head to the bikesdirect.com website.
It's like building a car by getting the parts from the parts shop - the cost of the parts, even at rock bottom prices, is almost always** going to be cheaper.
** I am sure there are exceptions to this rule.
Anyway if you want a super cheap frame to start with, scour ebay for a Moto frame that someone got from BD to part out. I bet you can get one at a bargain basement price!
End of editorial. We now return to your regularly scheduled thread.

Just googled it. Who knows, it may change the standard. Standard as in "Oh, you should definitely go with at least 105" to "You should at least get Tiagra."

it will always be a caad9 frame with neuvation or soul wheels, a smattering of nashbar/performace crap, and a hint of carbon somwhere stupid, like the stem cap...
Et voilá, your BF bike is done. Don't forget the bento box garnish

anyone know the weight of that generic 7005 aluminum frame on Nashbar that is priced at $75 right now?
EDIT: Thought I saw it was 7005, but Nashbar says it's 6061...not that it matters, but in the interest of full disclosure.

Just looked and it was about 1600g. On the heavy side but its well built and can definitely take a beating. The threads and headset surfaces were all perfect and the powdercoat is nice. Welds are gratuitous but what can you do.

thanks. I'm strongly considering buying this frame and transferring everything from my current frame which is too big for me. i figure most of it i can do myself. undecided at present though.
