Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dead feeling

I hear alot of people describe their rides or bikes as feeling "dead." What does this mean? Is this a good thing? Is this a "carbon" thing?

I've only ridden on aluminum bikes. I'm going to wait until I can upgrade to something amazing to ever even try carbon bikes. I would like to amaze myself

weak riders think a frame is dead 'cause they can't flex it.

It's probably laterally compliant, but vertically stiff.

I think they are referring to when carbon frames have a "dead" road feel. In other words, the feel of the road is too muted and the bike doesn't feel connected to the road. I experienced this with my friend's Specialized Roubaix sl2. It just felt mushy and "dead" compared to the livelier feel of my cervelo r3 or look 595. Hard to explain really, but that's probably what they were talking about.

I think many ppl refer to the "dead" feeling of carbon frames as the muting of road buzz, which can be a good thing. Personally, when I say a bike feels dead, it's not a good thing. It means the bike lacks liveliness and doesn't feel snappy, which is usually a by-product of torsional flex.

So there's really lacking "buzz" and lacking "zip."
Dead can mean two things.

a road bike that feels too smooth .. a person that wants to feel more of the road and have a harsher ride which makes it feel 'faster' ... that or they just want to spend money? People buy new cars because they are bored with the old ones, using every excuse in the book.

My car is 11 years old now and still looks new.. with klasse sealant and a good interior scrubbing. A good detail job works wonders. Spending money out of boredom is an expensive thing to do.
