Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Truck forum jokes about hitting cyclists

I hate it when I belong to another message board with similar interests and then find out how much we actually clash.

I belong to a car forum with a few (few) other cyclists, and we've clashed as well in the past.

The people who think bikes need to be on sidewalks will always think that, and pretty much think it's just hilarious. I'm really not sure why. Most of the people I know (both online and in real life, who joke about cyclists) are perfectly normal people. They'd NEVER joke about running over people on sidewalks, etc. But take the same person and put them on the bike, it's hilarious.

Well, if there's anything behind the rhyme I'd say we don't have to.

F150 forum...
Their ignorant hate is living up perfectly to the camo wearing, tobacco chewing, sheep, goat, and cousin loving stereotype. Not sure anything you say to their face, much less an anonymous forum, is going to make a bit of difference.

It amazes me every day.
I read post from people with $50,000+ trucks that sound like such a$$ hats.
I have to stop going there.

It's not just truck and car forums...The least two weeks there's been letters to the editor in our local paper about cyclists...The letters are you typical diatribes about us not following the rules of the road (same rules that most motorists having trouble grasping)...Riding 2-abreast and just generally being PITA's...

I thought about writing a rebuttal, but know it's pointless. The people that penned those letters and those that agree with them are usually a lost cause and not worth the effort....

It's usually the people who have big trucks and almost never use them because of their potential to be a work horse. They usually get them just cause it's a big truck. They often make jokes that equate to what a joke they are.

You should write the letter just to let other readers know the other side of the equation. We had similar anti-bicyclist letters written to our horribly conservative biased paper this year and they were rebutted by many positive-cycling letters. It was a good exchange that actually helped the local riding community.

Those truck drivers on that forum should know that the behaviour they are promoting is felonious.

seems like it was two people on that forum who were joking, every else is like wtf dude.

Used to live in virginia, like out in the country virginia, and ive never had so many nice encounters with trucks (which everyone has). literally every other car someone waves to you. its only the a-holes in the suburbs who buy a big ass truck for no reason that wanna play monster trucks with us.

same here... been a member of that 4M for many years... only been a "cyclist" for a short time though, relatively... but I never developed an attitude about bikers... I noticed a few of the guys here (myself included) have dropped comments in on that thread...

Agreed. Sometimes, I can't tell how some of the letters in the Chicago Trib get published. Many are poorly written and uninformed; the worst are the ones that sound smart but are just full of smoke and mirrors to distract the reader from the obvious, irrational bias. Of course, they're supposed to be public opinions, but the platform that a large newspaper is giving to dolts is inexcusable. When I was in college, I wrote a letter to a local Boulder paper chastising them for even publishing a letter to the editor claiming that vaccines are scientifically proven not to work (among other fallacies, but this was the worst), and my letter was published. In a community full of hippies and immigrants, offering such a dolt a public platform (which implicitly validates the writer's position as tenable) is doing the community a disservice.

It is worth the time to offer rebuttals in public forums, especially when the opportunity for productive discourse exists.

edit: before I get flamed with "everyone is entitled to an opinion," consider some of the garbage letters that get published in a large paper. How many letters must they receive every day? My reaction is: "They chose this to occupy limited space?" Sure, people can have their stupid opinions, but why would a major paper publish writing that is hateful, poorly reasoned, of limited value, or just plain wrong?

My wife and I have argued about this before. She is a really "give everyone the benefit of the doubt" type. I think there are a lot of people like that out there. Not everything is an opinion. "I like pizza" is an opinion. There are many things people say that can be refuted and proven wrong, yet people still say "it's just his opinion."

I feel too often people are given a pass under the "it's just an opinion" clause when they should be called out as being wrong. It is okay to tell someone "That's not correct." I do it all the time, and not just on the inter tubes.

Folks that are anti-vaccine, believe in homeopathy, etc., need to be let known that their "opinion" isn't really an opinion. They are just wrong and believe in foolish things.

That guy's post (on the truck forum) just about reflects the level of maturity I'd expect from somebody who proclaims himself a "boy".
