When to replace cables and housings?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'd probably inspect and do maintenance before I replaced them. I'd loosen them and slide the housing up and down the cable to expose the hidden cable, looking for any signs of rust or breaks. I'd also check inside the shifter/brake housing for signs of wear. If it all looked good, I'd put a light lube on 'em and re-attach 'em and re-adjust everything.

Regarding the headset...I've got Cane Creeks on both my road bikes and find they work fine for my needs. If you change, you'll probably need to have the FSA headset cups changed out and the new ones pressed in.

I change shift cables every year.

If your headset works it's probably fine.

Can someone recommend a lower cost but perfectly functional cable set? I'll pay more for quality cables only if they have a demonstrable (not theoretical) and significant improvement in longevity or performance.

Jagwire for lower cost yet functional. Yokozuna for demonstrable quality.

+1, actually Jagwire's "Racer" line is pretty expensive. I've not used them, however, only the basic model which I do like.

More expensive than some cables, and in particular for the comment I was replying to-- they cost more than Yokozuna Jet Lube cables.

Is the racer line the one with the kevlar in it?

depends on yer levers. i tried jagwire racer set with campy ergolevers and got mediocre performance. switched to genuine campy cables and shifting is magic! not cheap, but good.

on other bike that came with campy cables, after 3 years of hard riding, about 15K total miles, lots of rain, dirt, etc, the shift quality degreaded. new cables and voila - shifts like new.

Especially Dura-Ace shift and brake cables. They've never let me down!

And you can sometimes get them cheap on eBay.

Where can you get them for less than $35 shipped?

I've never tried them. I use Racer on the CX bike and DA on the road bike.
