Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

couple carbon wheel questions

I already bought a set of expensive carbon wheels like a dumb a** so now I need to know typically and not exactly what type of life one gets out of a carbon wheel set with daily use. How does one know when a carbon wheelset is through it's useful life. Do you generally change the ceramic bearings seasonally? As far as wear is it generally the braking suface that goes first and once the braking surface is worn can the wheels be reworked or are they done? Sorry if these are obvious questions, but I am new to this and thanks in advance.

Here's a fun discussion. I think the wear-and-tear question got answered:

As for the bearings, if you have ceramic bearings and they wear out in 1 year, then they are even more a waste of money than usual.

Any rim with a worn out brake surface is done. Yes. No way around that.

Make sure you use the appropriate brake pads so the rims last longer.

According to the other thread, worn out carbon brake surfaces can be repaired. I assume this is if there is no actual damage to the rims.

Yeah I don't think I'd trust that.

I'll find out soon. I went back to LBS on Friday to borrow a set of Zipp 303s, and asked what the ultimate fate of that worn down carbon rim they showed me was. The answer was "You want it?"

Easton ec90slx. I fell in love with them when I went in to build my bike. I now recognize what a Very Poor Impulse purchase this was, but I guess at this point I just ride em, try to enjoy them and try not to get sucked in next time I have to purchase wheels. I will also use the hula hoop idea mentioned above.

I dunno, a guy I ride with a lot just got some of those wheels this year and, for the first time ever, is now routinely dropping me. Could be placebo, but I blame the wheels.
