Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's pretty difficult to rack 'em in a crash on a road bike, BUT if you ride in the snow a lot with cheap plastic pedals then you've a valid concern, I think.

Voted neutral but my main gripe with Specialized being non-pleasing aesthetically are the ginormous HT... The bikes are probably great, just looks crap to me.

Now if we're talking about fugly, the S5 is fugly... yuck

Seriously? Eight pages and over 180 posts on straight vs angled top tubes.

Makes me want to start a new poll and thread on black vs white riding shoes.

The proper nomenclature is sloping top tube.

As far as shoes goes, that thread will be short, black shoes goes with black helmet, and white goes with white helmet, end of it, full stop.

I still like the top tube of my Trek but prefer the ride of the Tarmac. I think the top tubes on Specialized are fine on the Tarmac but the Venge and Roubaix are hideous.

^^ They are nice bikes but would never buy them. I can't stand to buy American bikes made in Taiwan.

Personally, I think you can make a functional, good looking bike with either traditional geometry or a sloping top tube.

Oi! Don't ya'll go bashin' them S5'ses! Aero road bike design is the best thing that has happened to the bike industry in years. Thin round tubes are fugly (ergo vintage bikes are mostly extremely fugly with the old parts etc. Yuk!)

But before I get enormous amounts of flak for this post, let me just say that in my opinion efficiency is beauty. Aero is efficient (maginally, but still...) and so it's pretty. Then again the british olympic road bike was a bit much even for me.

But the real culmination of bicycle beauty is the TT-bike.

I don't mind a sloping top tube, plus it allows me to have the head tube length that I prefer without having to resort to an extended head tube about the top tube junction (which looks hideous, in my opinion).

Yes, please bump this. This conversation needs to be stretched out.

Is this the hour record bike? Is it a belt drive? What exactly is going on here?
