Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Video Camera – Replay XD1080

Anyone own this thing? I'm considering one, but I haven't seen many reviews on it. Somebody on here must own one. I'm aware of the GoPro and their new model, but I really don't want something that looks like a camera on my bike.

Mind the wind noise. I just had it O-Ring mounted to my handlebars (a la Dinotte).

Nice kit, wish the battery was a little more robust. The billet mounts they sell are ridiculously expensive! Can't beat the form factor over GoPro's, which is why I went with them in the first place. Night time shots are decent for a cam this size. There's a review from HotRod magazine IIRC that compares this cam with a couple different competitors.

Thanks. Have you tried tape or the sticky over the mic yet or an external mic? I live near the coast, and there's a lot wind here. I was going to get one of those elastic headband holders I saw for it I don't use a helmet and a billet tube mount.

Vids were shot in SoCal, Santa Ana River Trail, off the 91 starting at Green River. I've got a couple other vids on my channel that show some low light capabilities, while being mounted on the helmet. The camera is very light, but I like the view/stability from the stem/handlebars. Fork/dropout mounting may be an option if I can fit one of those axle adapters they sell for lights on the front/rear.

Been meaning to videotape some descents around the local mountains (GMR, Mount Wilson/Angeles Crest HWY), but I forget to mount the cam before taking off. Vibration is a bit of an issue, and I wanted to try using a silicone plug as a washer between the bar and cam. Re: wind noise, I may experiment with some tape and see how that fairs.

I don't think external mic is an option yet (firmware update), but the Replay guys are very busy working on the accessories for racing applications!

andrace, nice! How did you have yours mounted? Reflector mounts could actually work, but I'd prefer something metal to lessen any extra movement.

I use their pro frame mount and have it under the stem. Super stealthy, but slightly tricky to work the buttons. It's not really an issue, and likely the easiest to use of the camera options out there.

Not to derail the original inquiry, but has anyone played with one of these?

The form factor looks promising.

Well, I haven't used any video camera. From what I've read it's one of the easiest to use, and it has an LCD display and remote. It has good video. I didn't like its sound, but there's an external mic input for it.

I've had mine for about a month or so. Battery life isn't the best, but there's a battery adapter in the works. It'll probably just attach on the rear end. The windbreaker I placed over the mic worked much better than I expected. It eliminates pretty much all the wind noise for the speeds I go. Going 20-25mph with the windbreaker, I don't hear any wind noise. If you attach it to a car at higher speeds, it would probably pick up wind noise. Foam with tape over it may work better. If you record for longer than 30min, it automatically creates another file. A couple times mine turned on while in my backpack shortening the battery life. You have to hold the ON button for 2s to turn on, so it must've been pinned against something. I haven't had that problem lately though. On the newer firmwares, there's the option to have it turn off after 5min of no activity. I was running firmware v42, and it would turn off while I'm transferring my files, so I turned that feature off. Oh and water drops on the lens can cause a blur but they roll or bounce off and are less frequent than you would expect from the amount of rain.

Rimmer....Overall how do you like it? Have you ever used the Contour or Go Pro cameras, if you have how does the replay compare?

Thanks

I don't own any other video camera, so I can't compare with experience. I'm happy with the firmware updates and upcoming accessories (battery and exchangeable lenses). I have the aluminum mount for it that only takes a few seconds to mount and dismount. It uses a 4mm hex key. I wish video and night quality was better. The fact that it's inconspicuous or not very noticeable is one of the mean reasons getting it.

is anyone using a generic usb external battery? you can get 1100mAh pretty cheap, and (I doubt you would want or need) as big as 7,000.

Probably. The internal battery capacity is rated at 750mAh. With the settings I use, I get about 80min of battery life, and that records about 8GB. Their specs claim 120min. I end up charging it while at school. I use a 16GB card, so a 1000mAh external battery would probably do fine unless I decide to get a bigger memory card.
