Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It really is the sugar. When I lost 75 pounds I still ate pizza, hamburgers, etc. All I really had to do was stop eating sweets and dessert after dinner and the pounds literally melted away. Sugar is completely unnecessary for the human diet and offers no nutrition. It's basically like a poison or a drug. It has no benefits other than giving you pleasure while you are eating it and it's almost toxic in what it does to the body. I even find that eating nothing but sugary snacks on the bike leads to me feeling like crap. When I eat healthy snacks that have protein and other components I feel much better and can ride much longer before bonking.

Love the story Pcad. I just about melted at the "So Cutshall began contacting frame builders to see if they could make him a bike strong enough to support his weight. The responses trickled in. A few called Cutshall a disgrace."

Definitely a reason to wisely place more emphasis on positivity and being helpful than on the usual snark in our community. Where appropriate of course...

I really enjoyed his blog. Odd writing, but super fun to read.

Favourite quote:
Sure, it's a self-limiting kind of deal that says to its rider: "So, your legs feel pretty great today huh?" as you approach hills with nimble legs & thoughts of speed while climbing... but the Pug's answer is always the same when you climb, "**** You: not today, not ever"...
But maybe that's because I have an inexplicable attraction to Surly's Pugsley.

Thanks for sharing this. I am gong to pass this on to a buddy I am trying to get into cycling to lose weight. He just started a diet program and begin indoor stationary cycling, and have already dropped 40 lbs or so, but he is still afraid to get on the road. This will help.

Don't worry, they won't reproduce and their genes will be culled out of the collective pool.

This guy has a wife and a daughter. He reproduced his "stupid and weak" genes so people like mark1974 will continue to post childish things like that for the rest of time.

If you are being serious, and I hope you're not, then the stupid and weak part has an obvious origin.
